Now that the new congressional term is underway, Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Jared Polis (D-CO) have launched a new effort to end marijuana prohibition in the United States. Both are introducing bills that together would end marijuana prohibition and turn it into a well-regulated market.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt boasts to Bloomberg about the rapid proliferation of Google’s Android smartphone operating system, comparing it to Microsoft’s domination of the desktop platform in the 90s. and if everyone remembers the 90s correctly, the Department of Justice stepped in and smacked Microsoft around for antitrust violation, without which they would have no doubt strangled Google in its infancy.

Zoe Lofgren (D-CA, @RepZoeLofgren) and Anna Eshoo (D-PhRMA, @RepAnnaEshoo) add their names to the list of members of Congress telling the FTC to abdicate their responsibility to oversee antitrust activity and just let Google do whatever the heck it wants.

By citing DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart’s own description of her agency’s “highest priority” — abuse of prescription drugs — and his own home state’s documented success weaning prescription drug addicts by the use of legal medical marijuana, Congressman Jared Polis actually got the Top Drug Cop to move off her “all drugs are bad, m’kay?” repetition to the more forthright and useful statement that “We will pursue any avenues to reduce drug addiction.”
This statement may cause a problem for her, since it is a lie.

As part of the “It Gets Better” project, the Co-Chairs of the Congressional LGBT Caucus today released a video message of hope and encouragement to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and those questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Congressmen Barney Frank (D-MA), Jared Polis (D-CO), and David Cicilline (D-RI), produced the video.

Senator Al Franken and 22 cosponsors introduced the Student Non-Discrimination Act, a companion to companion bill to H.R. 4530, introduced by Rep. Jared Polis in the House early this year, which would prohibit discrimination in schools on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
