Late Night: Man vs. Machine

By: Thursday August 14, 2014 8:00 pm

When I was in college, I took a two part class called War in the Modern World, as a conscious departure from the social history that was my focus of study. The experience was eye-opening, and continues to be.

By “modern,” it referred to the period from the US Civil War to the present (the early 1980′s), based on the fact that the Civil War was won by pure industrial might, and the victor was the belligerent that could out-produce the other and hurl the most materiel and men onto the pile.

By: Tuesday August 12, 2014 3:40 pm

A federal judge in Detroit has reversed his decision issued nearly two weeks ago and recused himself from a case involving a Palestinian American woman, who allegedly committed immigration fraud. She is accused of neglecting to disclose on naturalization forms that she had been imprisoned by Israelis in Palestine for decades for terrorism-related offenses.

Gaza Strikes Resume as Ceasefire Ends

By: Friday August 8, 2014 10:59 am

With peace talks in Cairo treading water, fire is once again being exchanged between Hamas and Israel after a 72-hour ceasefire expired. Once rockets were fired into Israel an Israel launched it’s own strikes, one of which killed a ten year old Palestinian boy. The people of Gaza’s brief three day reprieve from bloodshed is now over.

5,000 Texans March for Gaza

By: Thursday August 7, 2014 2:25 pm

On Aug. 2, Sheikh Islam Mossaad ended his speech at the Texas Stands With Gaza rally by quoting these words of Martin Luther King, Jr. The quotation was preceded by a passionate speech invoking the spirit of dead Palestinian children and calling on the living youth of the world to take up their struggle:

“But we do not have much time. The revolutionary spirit is already worldwide. If the anger of the peoples of the world at the injustice of things is to be channeled into a revolution of love and creativity, we must begin now to work, urgently, with all people, to shape a new world.”

If a Genocide Falls in the Forest

By: Wednesday August 6, 2014 8:59 am

There’s a wide and mysterious chasm between the stated intentions of the Israeli government as depicted by the U.S. media and what the Israeli government has been doing in Gaza, even as recounted in the U.S. media. With the morgues full, Gazans are packing freezers with their dead children. Meanwhile, the worst images to be [...]

By: Tuesday August 5, 2014 6:45 am

Writers for The Times of Israel are not the only ones looking to obliterate the Palestinians in Gaza. Moshe Feiglin, the Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, has said it is time for Israel to take all of Gaza, destroy Hamas and all of their supporters, and send the Palestinians to concentration camps on the Sinai border until Israel can find countries willing to accept them.

Rand Paul Forgets He Supported Cutting Aid to Israel

By: Monday August 4, 2014 6:30 pm

There is no surer sign that someone is lining up to run for president than when they start genuflecting before AIPAC.

And therefore it should have been no surprise that Rand Paul, who did in fact in 2011 support cutting aid to Israel, has suddenly had a memory lapse.

Times of Israel Publishes Op-Eds Calling for Genocide of Palestinians

By: Monday August 4, 2014 1:32 pm

In what will hopefully be the zenith of neofascism in Israel, the Times of Israel published an op-ed titled “When Genocide is Permissible.” The post, written by Yochanan Gordon, called for ethnically cleansing the Palestinian population ending with the question “If political leaders and military experts determine that the only way to achieve its goal of sustaining quiet is through genocide is it then permissible to achieve those responsible goals?”

By: Monday August 4, 2014 6:51 am

Better late than never? After weeks of defending Israel’s strikes on Palestinian civilians in Gaza as necessary and appropriate, the US State Department finally issued a statement condemning one of Israel’s attacks. The State Department labeled Israel’s shelling of yet another UN school as “disgraceful” and called on Israel to “meet its own standards and avoid civilian casualties.”
