Barak Obama is the first Democratic president to advocate cutting Social Security benefits. Whatever happens next, this is a historic change of direction for his party and an ominous turning point for the American social/economic compact.

Howard Dean and the leaders of the House Congressional Progressive Caucus in the House are saying basically the same thing — kill the bill — since the Senate is struggling so badly to pass meaningful and effective reform legislation. We should also expect a sustained assault on the highly unpopular individual mandate over the next few days.
