In Syria, where the death toll in the Arab uprising has reached beyond 7,500, security forces are mounting a final assault on the city of Homs. Over 100 died in shelling on Homs today, according to human rights groups, and the rebel fighters in the Baba Amr district have dwindled to about 400. At least three journalists continue to be trapped in Homs. A mass grave has also been found near Homs, with dozens of bodies.

The Obama Administration has opened the door a crack to the possibility of arming the Syrian rebels. The biggest problem with arming Syrian rebels is that there is no unified opposition to arm. If little was known about the Libyan rebels, we seem to know even less for Syria. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey said on CNN this weekend, “Until we’re a lot clearer about who they are and what they are, I think it would be premature to talk about arming them.”

Hours after a horrific massacre in Homs, China and Russia vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Syria, one which was already watered down in an attempt to get the support of the Russians.

Observers from the Arab League have reached Homs, Syria, at the same time as Syrian security forces pulled tanks off the streets. Even then, security forces squeezed off their final shots at the protesters and tanks are still reported waiting just outside the cities.
