A provision of the tax code that is meant to prohibit criminal organizations that sell illegal drugs from deducting normal business expenses on their federal taxes has now been applied to state-approved medical marijuana dispensaries. This can create a crippling tax burden.

Here is another reason Republicans are sadly our best hope for protecting Social Security. The powerful conservative group Americans For Tax Reform, founded by Grover Norquist, called chained-CPI a middle class tax increase. In a column recently published by POLITICO, Americans for Tax Reform’s Grover Norquist and American Civil Liberties Union’s Laura Murphy write, “In the age of the Internet, your privacy is not Fourth Amendment safe. Government agents cannot tap your phone without a warrant issued by a judge based on some indication you are involved in wrongdoing, but the government claims the authority to read your emails without a warrant. The government can’t open your postal mail or seize papers from your home without a warrant, but it says it can read any private and sensitive documents you’ve stored in the Internet ‘cloud.’”

I like to compare Norquist’s pledge to a pledge to never shoot a panda. Any member of Congress who walked down to the National Zoo and shot one of the giant pandas would see their political career ruined, whether or not they signed a “no panda shooting” pledge.

The big story I’m supposed to chase today concerns Republican legislative figures distancing themselves from the Grover Norquist pledge, opening the door a crack to increases in tax revenue. This is really a Washington process story about lobbying power rather than a legitimate policy evolution, however.

Grover Norquist, the anti-tax zealot, has become an ally in the fight to cut the military budget. He criticized the two day-old Romney/Ryan ticket yesterday, for the fact that they would increase defense spending.

Grover Norquist must have seen the Bat-Signal showing that Republicans, perhaps in an effort to get out of the box he’s created for them, were flirting with allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire and passing a separate tax cut after the fact, as a backwards way to increase revenue. So Norquist issued a warning he won’t be fooled.

Breaking a united front in the Republican Party that goes back a number of years, freshman GOP Congressman Rick Crawford (R-AR) will unveil a millionaire’s surtax proposal today.
The Grover Norquist excommunication ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday.
