The usual cheerleaders are out to sing the blessings of increased levels of carbon monoxide.

It’s funny, in the least funny of ways, how a week that began in unspeakable tragedy unfolded into one filled with so much absurdity and journalistic malpractice, along with a truly bizarre string of unrelated events, that the actual news was often so frankly guffaw-inducing that The Onion would have a hard time topping it.

Three events collided this past week for me in the space of 36 hours, all revolving around climate change: Obama’s inaugural address, the death of John Chandley, and the decision of Nebraska’s governor to allow the Keystone XL pipeline to be built in his state. Three other events loom on the horizon: the ongoing drought, the Presidents Day protests in DC led by 350.org and Bill McKibben, and the eventual decision — one way or another — by President Obama on that pipeline.

Back in August, the founder and CEO of Whole Paycheck Foods pissed off quite a few of his customers with his right-wing screed on health care reform in the WSJ. As it turns out, this op-ed wasn’t the product of a quirky, idiosyncratic independent, but rather, a fairly typical wingnut, as we learn in this week’s New Yorker.

After a series of debacles, the WaPost should’ve barred George Will from ever writing about climate change again, but I guess, in the wake of CLIMATEGATE!11!, he can’t help himself.

It should be bizarre, but is in fact grimly typical, how the whole phony “climate-gate-scandal” has played out so far. Hundreds of emails between climate scientists were hacked — stolen — from servers at East Anglia University. The stolen materials were then misrepresented, distorted, and lied about, and the scientists involved abused, insulted, and accused of everything from deliberate fraud to acting as the willing dupes of the shadowy liberal-fascist “global warming industry.”

Global Warming denial has a warm and cozy home on the minority side of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee. Yet again, on the eve of the Christmas holiday, Jim Inhofe and side-kick Marc Morano have released a shrill and utterly deceptive “report” falsely claiming a large number of scientists rejecting Global Warming theory. Yet again, the Majority side seems to have gone on vacation while the Minority uses the Commitee platform for propagating disinformation and deceit.
