Stopping the Keystone XL Pipeline Is a National Security Issue

By: Saturday February 1, 2014 9:00 am

The illogic emerging from the State Department yesterday on the Keystone XL pipeline would be mindboggling, if my mind hadn’t already been boggled so often in the past when it comes to this funnel of death. “Approval or denial of any one crude oil transport project, including the proposed project, is unlikely to significantly impact the rate of extraction in the oil sands,” they said. By this logic, TSA should be shut down. After all, “Inspection of passengers on any one airplane trip, including those going in and out of DC’s National Airport, is unlikely to significantly impact the rate of terrorism.”

But if they won’t listen to scientists, and they won’t listen to to lefty tree-hugger environmentalists, maybe they’ll listen to the military . . .

FDL Movie Night: Obey

By: Monday January 13, 2014 4:59 pm

Tonight’s movie, Obey, comes loaded with a powerful filmmaking punch: All images were found online and reconfigured to create a dystopian 51 minute vision, based on journalist Chris Hedges’ book Death of the Liberal Class.

Hedges’ book made the argument that a breach has occurred between the liberal class– consisting of academics, artists, educators, creatives, clergy, journalists, politicians, etc–and the radical social and political movements it once supported or sympathized with.

Mother Nature Isn’t Sending a Message . . . It’s Just Coincidence

By: Wednesday May 25, 2011 7:17 pm

Every night, the evening news shows us the destruction and deaths wrought by another example of Mother Nature’s wrath, as though every one is an entirely unrelated event. And the next story moves, without connection, to the debates in Congress, in which the Administration and dodo Congressional leaders haggle over contrived non-problems and positions oblivious to what’s happening in the real world.

Before the Sierra Club’s New Director Invites Guests Over, He Needs to Clean House

By: Thursday June 17, 2010 2:20 pm

While I’m pleased to see Michael wants to welcome Jane Hamsher and other progressives to the Sierra Club under his watch, I’m waiting for Michael to do what any good host does before he throws a housewarming party: clean the house.

When Black Friday Doesn’t Come: Happy Buy Nothing Day!

By: Friday November 27, 2009 3:01 pm

This Friday 134 million American lemmings with credit cards will clog roads, parking lots, and cash registers, scurrying and reaching and inching along together to take hold of dead stuff. Then they’ll all reverse course, dragging the dead objects with them. This Friday 134 million American lemmings with credit cards will clog roads, parking lots, and cash registers, scurrying and reaching and inching along together to take hold of dead stuff. Then they’ll all reverse course, dragging the dead objects with them. Most of the objects they’ll burn lots of carbon to acquire travelled to America in huge ships burning lots of carbon (and toxic bunker fuel): manufacturing these objects burnt more carbon.

How else can we spend this Friday?

How did 43% of America’s population end up doing synchronized Anthropocene fire dances on a dangeously warming planet?

The usual suspects: Freud’s nephew and the Philadelphia Police Department.
