However important the SOPA victory was in 2012, its lasting significance depends on how well the diverse coalition holds together in these and other fights — and against business as usual in Washington.

I used to think that if only America’s political leaders could see the unemployed in the media, and hear their stories they would act. I don’t believe that anymore.

It appears that the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has ruffled a few feathers with its new character Zeb Colter. Zeb Colter is a Tea Party inspired Vietnam veteran, terrified of the changing demographics of America, who manages wrestler Jack Swagger. The xenophobic manager often charges “real Americans” to get rid of “whoever wants to cross our borders” illegally and cites Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Alex Jones as fans. The caricature of Tea Partiers did not sit well with Glenn Beck.

“I’m afraid that President Obama may have this ‘king complex’ sort of developing, and we’re going to make sure it doesn’t happen.”
Thus spake Rand Paul, US Senator (!), somewhat before he knew what, exactly, Obama’s proposals would entail. But does that really matter? True believers like Paul are reliably armed with two of the three things they’ve ever half-read (not written by Ayn Rand), the Bible and the Constitution, and have come to some pretty novel conclusions about both works. Of course, such conclusions are completely nuts, but nonetheless at least as infallible as whatever comes out of the Pope’s ass on any given day, so there.

Remember when the Tea Party was supposed to be a grass roots organization, unaffiliated with either party, just a group of folks who were fed up with corruption in Washington? To all those who didn’t buy it, you win.

Rick Santorum, who has been leading the fight against ratification, appeared on Glenn Beck’s radio program when Beck ominously cited language from the convention proclaiming that “children with disabilities shall be registered immediately after birth” to suggest that something “really Orwellian or, quite honestly, fascistic from the Nazi days” was going on; an assessment with which Santorum heartily agreed.

Rush Limbaugh has lost it. Completely. First of all, he’s weeks behind TBogg who predicted the Batman Dark Knight Rises‘ villain being named Bane “it’s an attack on Mitt Romney” nutbaggery conspiracy. But with Glenn “Crazy Eyes” Beck banished to his own self-created ice prison of GBTV, someone had to take over the far right tinfoil concession. Check out this frothing rant…

Australian journalist Taki Oldham, our guest tonight, takes an undercover trip to Tea Parties across the country and into the heart of the Tea Party movement to uncover the astroturfing of America. With Billionaires’ Tea Party, Oldham shows how political messaging is the designed and shaped by corporate-funded think tanks and propagandists.

It seems that the metastasizing scandal at Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp is finally having some repercussions on this side of the Atlantic, but naturally not in the way you’d think. Although ol’ Rupert himself confirmed this week that that he is “cooperating” with the US Department of “Justice” on the FCPA implications of the hacking/bribery/influence peddling outrages that have gripped Britain for months, this is the Holder Justice Department after all, so he’s not exactly quaking in his orthopedic loafers about that.
