Obamacare Can Handle the “Keep Your Health Plan” Bill

By: Wednesday November 13, 2013 11:20 am

While this political measure would cause some policy problems with the Affordable Care Act, Democrats should know the new system can handle this modest change.

The Tech World Gets a New Trade Association, Or “How to Read a DC Press Release”

By: Friday September 21, 2012 9:55 am

Some tech reporters rightly noted that with the formation of the Internet Association, it looks like Google is getting the SOPA band back together again. But nobody asked the rather obvious question: why an industry that spent $129 million on lobbying in 2011 needed yet another lobbing shop, especially when the Net Coalition already exists.

Ahem. Allow Bytegeist to read the tea leaves.

Confessions of a Job Creator

By: Wednesday September 5, 2012 2:05 pm

Some people think they know some things about us job creators. The guy whose job it is supposed to be to represent me in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), who has of course been featured before on these pages, thinks he knows some things about us job creators. He sent me an email the other day, like he likes to do sometimes, to make sure I didn’t miss his latest op-ed, which ran August 30 in his favorite small-town, low-circulation weekly, which apparently lets him publish whatever disingenuous propaganda he thinks his corporate overlords might want to read. The title of his latest is “Survey Highlights Top Concerns of U.S. Job Creators,” and you can read it in its entirety here.

House Postpones Witch Hunt While Nuclear Industry Awaits Results of Latest Power Play

By: Monday June 4, 2012 2:20 pm

The House Committee on Energy and Commerce indefinitely postponed its Thursday hearing on the “politicization of the [NRC] and the actions and influence of Chairman Jaczko.” Gregory Jaczko, of course, announced his resignation on May 21, and President Obama nominated Allison Macfarlane as his replacement three days later. Here’s more behind the deal.

Solyndra Execs to Plead the Fifth at House Energy and Commerce Witch Hunt

By: Wednesday September 21, 2011 2:00 pm

Solyndra executives are being hauled before a GOP House Committee today, the latest props in the conservative right’s war on clean energy. The House Energy and Commerce Committee wants to bat them around a bit and also use them as a way to point out alleged White House corruption. But the executives will plead the fifth instead.

Invisible Town Hall Revolution Continues to Roll, With Real Impact on GOP

By: Saturday August 20, 2011 10:59 am

We’re seeing more evidence today of the “Invisible Town Hall Revolution,” the pushback by ordinary Americans for progressive values like tax fairness, good jobs now and the social safety net. Freshman Rep. Randy Hultgren was cornered at one of his town halls by constituents who demanded taxes on the wealthy.

Catfood Commission II Member Contributors Revealed: Lots and Lots of Bank Cash

By: Monday August 15, 2011 6:30 pm

Rep. Fred Upton says the Catfood Commission II has already gotten to work. I don’t know if that simply means that the members have already started raising money off the fact that they’re members of the Catfood Commission II or what. But apparently there’s been a little activity.

Republicans Choose Their Interchangeable Parts for Catfood Commission II

By: Wednesday August 10, 2011 10:00 am

There were no real surprises among the choices made by John Boehner and Mitch McConnell for the Catfood Commission II. It’s perhaps interesting to note that Paul Ryan didn’t make the cut, but I guess Boehner figured that he’s toxic and therefore not a good face to put on the committee. Instead, Boehner picked two heads of other committees with jurisdiction over health programs and taxes, and made the chair a member of the original Catfood Commission as well as the House Leadership.
