Tonight’s film, Immigrant America: The High Cost of Deporting Parents, directed by guest Roy Germano for VICE News, shows the impact of deportation on one family. Ray Jesus is just one of the faces caught up in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) quota of 400,000 deportations a year.

Growing old, something we all face. Growing old in the New York of the 1970′s where
“Life wasn’t so beautiful and the winters were cold”
created a diaspora to Florida–over half a million people over 55 moved to Florida from 1975 to 1980, according to the Census Bureau. In Delray Beach an enterprising developer created a seemingly idyllic community of two-story stucco buildings surrounded by tropical plants, with swimming pools, shuffleboard courts, and recreation halls. They named it Kings Point. The down payment was $1,500, slightly more for a second story unit since supposedly the bugs couldn’t get in. (In a stunning oversight, there are no elevators!)

I am beyond tired of the old “children need a mother AND a father” insult.
It says to all people that they should not hope to ever be an effective parent to a healthy kid unless paired up with the “right” co-parent. It says that no amount of compassion, devotion, competence, or love by a single parent or a gay/lesbian couple can be good enough to create healthy family space for a child.
The argument also strikes at the heart of the “traditional” families it supposedly promotes.

California’s budget crisis is actually much less than they’re spending on the war in Afghanistan. $26 billion for the budget vs $38 billion for war. And what do they get for it? It’s not better to live in California thanks to the war. It’s actually getting much, much worse.
