State Department Keystone XL Study Done by Oil Industry-Connected Firm with Big Tobacco, Fracking Ties

On March 1, the U.S. State Department published its long-awaited Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the TransCanada Keystone XL (KXL) tar sands pipeline.

Flying in the face of the slew of scientific studies both on the harms of burning tar sands and on the KXL itself, State determined that laying down the pipeline is environmentally sound. Unmentioned by State: the study was contracted out to firms with tar sands extraction clientele, as revealed by InsideClimate News.

Bill McKibben Links Obama/State Dept. Cronyism to Cheney’s Energy Task Force; Supports #Occupy

Bill McKibben, founder and leader of the recent TarSands protests and arrests in front of the White House, has an op-ed in the New York Times today that will not make President Obama happy.
McKibben pointedly links the corporate cronyism shown by the Obama State Department’s cozy relationship with the sponsors and lobbyists for the Keystone XL Pipeline with Dick Cheney’s Big Oil dominated 2001 energy task force.
