Economic Optimism Drops

Optimism about the state of the economy dropped since earlier this year, according to a new AP-GfK poll. In February 30 percent of the country called the state of the economy good, now just 20 percent of the country feels that way.


Obama Job Approval Rating Steadily Improving, Tracking Economy

For the past eight months President Obama’s job approval rating has been steadily improving while his disapproval numbers have fallen by a similar amount, according to Gallup’s tracking. The turnaround for Obama’s approval started in mid 2011 and closely mirrors the same turnaround in economic confidence that began in mid 2011. “It’s the economy, stupid.”

String of Positive Economic News Helps Boost Obama Job Approval

Recently we have seen a string of positive economic indicators that all point to the same general pattern. While the individual pieces are subjectively good compared to pre-crisis level, the data gives the clear impression that the economy is modestly trending in a positive direction.

Americans’ Economic Confidence Continues to Dramatically Improve

Economic confidence among Americans has been trending significantly upwards for five straight months according to Gallup. While Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index of -27 is still objectively bad, it is a dramatic improvement from last summer. And there’s clearly a solid positive trend, which is good news for the incumbent President.

The American people’s economic confidence, though still negative, is the highest (least negative) it has been in months according to Gallup. There is clearly a trend moving in a positive direction. If this positive trend keeps up for several more months, President Obama’s re-election prospects will become much better than they currently appear to be.

President Obama’s reelection poll numbers have slightly improved, giving him a slight edge over a generic Republican opponent and also a lead over Mitt Romney. That change has corresponded to recent slight improvement in American’d confidence in the economy.

President Obama’s job approval rating hits its lowest level yet in Gallup’s daily tracking polling. The three day rolling average found only 38 percent approve of the job Barack Obama is doing as president while 54 percent disapprove.
