Probably the most convenient thing about turning one’s political party into a something closer to a religion, as the Republicans have increasingly done, is that your adherents can be relied upon to believe anything you say, no matter how implausible, provably false, or downright cuckoo it happens to be. When you’re talking about a religion, after all, the more improbable the belief is, the more fervently it is held, and for Republicans this tendency is always a bonus, for good reason.

Our love affair with our cars has also been fueled by the devious actions of a few major corporations. The once ubiquitous electric streetcar was driven into the ground by colloboration of Big Oil and Big Auto. It wasn’t a fair fight.

Obama’s announcement on offshore drilling this week was a standalone measure. It was not in fact “paired with comprehensive energy conservation measures and alternative energy development.” By taking this action without the accompanying positive measures, this is a step further in the wrong direction than what was signaled during the campaign.
