The decision by the Seattle Police Department to hand out Doritos at Hempfest made national headlines, but ideally this kind of interaction with the police shouldn’t be so rare as to be considered newsworthy. The fact that it made national headlines highlights how destructive the war on drugs – in particular the war on pot- has been to many Americans’ relationship with law enforcement.

At the first Hempfest since Washington State legalized marijuana the Seattle police department will hand out more informational Doritos than tickets. That is small bags of Doritos with stickers on them explaining the state’s new marijuana law.

If you had, at the time, asked a participant in the Stonewall Riots—whose occurrence annual LGBTQ Pride parades commemorate—whether they envisioned a future where their cause was vocally supported by JP Morgan, Doritos, and the President of the United States, chances are your answer would have been a swift and sure “No.” But, in 21st century America…?
