Late Night: Crappy New Year

By: Thursday December 26, 2013 8:00 pm

On the bright side, David Gregory will finally fail at least laterally, and I’ll drink to that.

#MillionMaskMarch: Epic, Global — But Where Were the News Networks?

By: Thursday November 7, 2013 8:35 am

On November 5, 2013 tens of thousands of protestors marched in 477 locations around the globe. There were masks, chants, goofy signs, sincere view points, arrests, beatings, police opening up with non-lethal projectiles on protestors, flag burnings. There was lots of print/online coverage, but where were CNN, MSNBC and Fox News? And why weren’t they giving this global event any play?

NYC Tonight: The NSA Video Screening, FREE!

By: Tuesday October 15, 2013 5:31 pm

onight New Yorkers can see, for free, a video that might make the Powers That Be a weensy bit uncomfortable: The NSA Video, narrated by Evangeline Lilly (from The Hobbit and Lost). The NSA Video screens for free at Washington Square Park against the side of building from 9pm to 9:45pm tonight. Bring cocoa and and a blanket, folding chairs, popcorn. The video is five minutes long, but you may watch it over and over.

FDL Movie Night: Informant

By: Monday September 30, 2013 4:59 pm

Informant follows the engrossing and disturbing story of Brandon Darby, the handsome, impassioned radical activist turned FBI informant and Tea Party hero whose work with the FBI led to one man’s death in Austin, Texas, and the trial and imprisonment of two anarchists during the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Our guest tonight, Director Jamie Meltzer, has crafted a taut tale with re-enactments that break the fourth wall, conflicting accounts of key incidents, and an unreliable, perhaps confabulist, narrator.

Liberals, Religious Right Cursing NSA in Orgiastic Ritual

By: Monday August 19, 2013 7:15 pm

There’s a weird Top Sekrit location where the left, the middle, the conservatives, and the absolute raving bonkerites meet, dropping their armor and laying aside all their other conflicts. Lately the meal served at this swingers club is a boiling stew of stupid cooked up by the NSA which has managed unite almost every group from the far right religious fringe to the tree hugging vegans on the left.

Late Night: Media Fail: David Gregory Edition

By: Thursday August 15, 2013 8:00 pm

Wonder of wonders, every once in a while, the Free Market gets off its nattily-clad ass and renders judgement where judgement is way overdue, and this appears to be one of those times. You see, NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the longest running political show on TV, has come in dead last in the ratings, reaching less than 1% of US households, an astonishingly pathetic number which includes, presumably, the crummy motels and Pine-Sol scented nursing homes with which such shows are most commonly associated.

Late Night: They Must Love Us Now

By: Thursday July 25, 2013 8:00 pm

As I watched the first tiny peep of congressional rebellion against the odious, authoritarian policies that have swamped America since The Day That Changed Everything narrowly defeated in the House yesterday, I was reminded of the endlessly repeated, tinny refrain of those dark days, “They hate us for our freedom.” According to such preschool logic, the “Patriot Act,” passed nearly unanimously a few weeks later, should have fixed that once and for all.

Late Night: Lemonade (With Gin)

By: Thursday July 18, 2013 8:00 pm

Each week when I sit down to write a post, I wrack my brain to think of something positive, or at least relatively so, to write about, and each week events prevent this from happening. It’s hard not to feel typecast when even the most complimentary commenters nonetheless refer to one’s work as a “rant” or admit that I’ve made them more depressed, angry, hopeless, or whatever.

For that reason, I am happy to announce that for the first time in recent memory the week’s news, taken together, makes me feel uncharacteristically optimistic.

Late Night: Rose Mary and Time

By: Thursday June 20, 2013 8:00 pm

This was a big week for Watergate geeks like myself; with anniversaries falling like rain, from the initial break-in and arrests on Monday to today, for which we remember the notorious White House tape so damning that 18 1/2 minutes of it came up conveniently missing. Now, considering what was on the rest of the tapes, that little “stretch” of magnetic gossamer must have been quite something.
