FDL Movie Night: When I Walk

Tonight’s documentary When I Walk is a personal, intimate, and ultimately hopeful exploration of filmmaker and artist Jason DaSilva’s life with multiple sclerosis. Diagnosed in 2005 Jason, an award-winning filmmaker, turned the camera on himself in this unflinching and honest film.
Making a documentary about himself meant letting go of the camera–his mother, brother and friends did much of the shooting—as well as having to face after each day of shooting, his gradual physical deterioration captured on camera. While asleep he would dream of running, and then when awake struggle to walk and and edit.

Five Great Documentaries of 2013

In today’s environment where information streams seem ubiquitous, the quality of said information feels lax more often than not. Network television desperately looks to viral trends on-line as it flounders to survive consistently dropping ratings. As digital media gains more traffic, the quality of information is not always better on-line. BuzzFeed continually generates “listicles” with little substance or research. Websites like Huffington Post and Yahoo! Count on witty headlines for “click bait.”

We have featured many films here which have shown at Sundance. What actually goes on there, and how did the Sundance Film Festival begin and then morph into a mega-mall of moviemaking? Julian Starks’ documentary Journey to Sundance takes a wry look at the film festival, independent filmmaking and what “independent” actually means, at least to the people involved in various types of independent filmmaking.
