Saturday Art: Influential Authors: Carl Hiaasen

By: Saturday September 13, 2014 5:20 pm

Please Note: When I began this series, it was to cover a lot of authors whom I have found personally influential, even though this may only be because I enjoyed the stories they have told in their books or short stories. I’m just fortunate enough and well read enough that many of the authors I [...]

Julian Assange Media Rollout in Anti-Promotion for “The Fifth Estate”

By: Monday October 14, 2013 7:15 pm

Julian Assange is stirring a bubbling cauldron of interest that could result in The Fifth Estate‘s coffers running over, with the fair-haired boy of cyberspece delivering the Midas touch for the box office gold. WikiLeaks founder Assange has been giving interviews to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which will be publishing them this week, ahead of the film’s release, RT Spanish “Behind the News” host Eva Golinger, and weirdly, ABC’s “This Week.”

A 9/11 Takeaway: Media Consolidation in Action

By: Wednesday September 11, 2013 4:45 pm

I wish sometimes that the various news divisions within these organizations still reflected the pioneers of broadcast journalism. Even as he sometimes did commercial shows, Edward R Murrow brought in depth reporting. Walter Cronkite did a few appearances in network shows and movies but maintained his credibility. Disney’s already been boycotted (unsuccessfully) by the professional anti-LGBT crowd, so The Mouse House is likely ready for the explosion from the fringe any moment now as the channel plans to feature its first two-mom family on its children’s show Good Luck Charlie.

“Fiscal Cliff” Deal Packed With Corporate Welfare

By: Thursday January 3, 2013 8:39 am

What may be unknown to many who observed the “fiscal cliff” legislative brawl is that nestled within the legislation was a smorgasbord of corporate goodies. The corporate welfare provisions within the bill received scant attention as the chief concern for most was whether or not the Republican Congress would kill the deal and plunge America off “the cliff.”

By: Monday November 19, 2012 10:27 am

This weekend I got ahold of a copy of the Policy Brief on Copyright Law, prepared by the Republican Study Committee chaired by Jim Jordan (PDF). It was so remarkably fair, sound, common-sense and forward-thinking I sent it to Scarecrow and asked him if I was missing something.

Mike Huckabee’s Attack on Unbelievably Un-American Economic Terrorists

By: Monday September 26, 2011 1:35 pm

Mike Huckabee thinks groups that urge boycotts of companies that fund anti-LGBT organizations are engaged in un-American economic terrorism. By that definition there are lots of economic terrorists out there . . . on the right.
