On Monday the White House issued a veto threat against H.R. 5016, the appropriations bill which contains the amendment from Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) to prevent D.C. from spending money on marijuana decriminalization or legalization. President Obama opposes the underlying bill for several reasons laid out in the statement but did specifically mention the Harris amendment as one.

The people of Washington D.C. have no democratic power so they are forced to try to use their economic power to protect the basic freedoms all other Americans take for granted. That is why D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray (D) and the group D.C. Votes are urging people to boycott Maryland’s Eastern Shore if you believe in the most basic principles of democracy.

A republican end-around to derail cannabis decriminalization in Washington DC seems to have backfired. A neo-prohibitionist lawmaker who sponsored a bill to remove funds from DC that it might have spent to carry out the decriminalization effort inadvertently created a situation where cannabis could be technically legal in our nation’s capital.

It is tough to know if you should despise Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) more for wanting to strip a group of Americans citizens (who are predominately African-American) of their basic democratic rights or because he is just bad at his job.

Congressman Andy Harris (R-MD) has announced he will attempt to block Washington DC from implementing the marijuana law recently passed by the DC City Council and signed by DC Mayor Vincent Gray, which lowers the penalty for possession of small amounts of marijuana to a misdemeanor.
