Prosser Back in Lead for Wisconsin Supreme Court Seat (Update: Kloppenburg Back Up)

By: David Dayen Thursday April 7, 2011 2:06 pm

The numbers are likely to flip back and forth more than once throughout the next several weeks. A recount is almost certain, and we’re well within the window for that regardless of where the count ends up.

Stay tuned.

Kloppenburg Declares Victory by 204 Votes in Wisconsin

By: David Dayen Wednesday April 6, 2011 2:55 pm

JoAnne Kloppenburg, the unheralded Assistant US Attorney who just a few weeks ago didn’t seem to have much of a chance in a state Supreme Court election against a longtime Republican stalwart, declared victory today in the election, after all precincts on an initial count showed her leading by 204 votes out of 1.5 million cast.

Wisconsin: Kloppenburg Takes Razor-Thin Lead of 224 Votes with One Precinct Left (UPDATE: Lead Now 235)

There’s going to be a recount, that much is certain. Prosser’s campaign told supporters to be ready for one last night. But going into that recount, it looks like Kloppenburg will have the lead. And it’s amazing that this relative unknown had that opportunity, considering that in the primary just a month or so ago, she had the support of only 25% of the electorate, and Prosser had 55% support.

WI Supreme Court Election Liveblog

By: Eli Tuesday April 5, 2011 6:01 pm

As odd-year April elections go, tonight’s is actually kind of a big deal.  Republicans currently hold a 4-3 majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which will eventually rule on the legality of the procedural end-around that Scott Walker used to strip union workers of their collective bargaining rights.  But one of Walker’s most reliable robed [...]

Wisconsin Progressive-Labor Alliance Gears Up for Major Electoral Test Tomorrow

By: David Dayen Monday April 4, 2011 6:16 am

On Friday, Judge Maryann Sumi delayed for at least two months the implementation of the anti-union law in Wisconsin that would strip most collective bargaining rights from public employees. Sumi is ruling on whether the conference committee for the bill violated state open meetings requirements. In addition, Madison-area unions have filed suit over whether or not the bill passed had fiscal elements, meaning it would require a quorum of state Senators to consider it, which it did not receive. And a third lawsuit, filed late last week, alleges that the legislation is unconstitutional, “infringing on employees’ equal protection rights and their rights to freedom of speech and association.” You can read the complaint here. And that may not even be the last lawsuit against this legislation.

On a separate track from the legal challenges, you have the electoral payback that Democrats and labor unions are trying to exact on Republicans in the state. And tomorrow will be the first test of this.

A lot of polls have come out in the past couple days showing Scott Walker’s rising unfavorables in Wisconsin. But Walker won’t be on the ballot anytime soon. Just a week from tomorrow, Wisconsin voters will go to the polls in another statewide race for the state Supreme Court.
