The Rise of Anti-Gay Beltway Power Broker Cleta Mitchell – For Her, It’s Personal

By: Monday April 8, 2013 5:40 am

There’s a great piece up at The Atlantic by Jonathan Krohn that profiles Cleta Mitchell, who was the primary force behind GOProud’s exclusion from CPAC last year (and was embarrassed this year when her anti-gay panel featuring NOM’s Brian Brown was sparsely attended, while GOProud’s Jimmy LaSalvia was on a standing-room only panel).

She’s a partner in the powerful firm of Foley & Lardner and has among her client base of DC social conservatives Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC). Mitchell was referred to by the Wall Street Journal as “the consigliere” when it comes to campaign finance law, embraced by virtually all of the teahadist candidates.

CPAC and SXSW: an American Stew

By: Sunday March 17, 2013 9:30 am

It was spring break all over America. It was SXSW in Austin. It was CPAC time in Washington, D.C.

While I was listening in Austin to Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, CPAC attendees were complaining about life as beleaguered white people. Oh the prejudice they most overcome, and they will one day.

The cultures of SXSW and CPAC are so radically different that it’s a stretch to remember they are taking place in the same country or even on the same planet.

McCain-Paul Feud Carries Over Into CPAC

By: Friday March 15, 2013 9:04 am

What started as an Obama nominee filibuster has split the Republican Party in two. The principal combatants being Senator John McCain representing the imperialist faction and Senator Rand Paul representing the libertarian faction. The battle could determine the future of American foreign policy and civil liberties.

The dispute got personal with Senator McCain calling Senator Paul a member of the “wacko birds caucus.” And it appears Senator Paul used his time at CPAC yesterday to fire back.

At CPAC, Romney’s Calls for Cutting Social Security and Medicare Rankle Conservative Rank-and-File

Social Security Works spoke to several conservatives at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this past Friday, who were none too pleased to hear Mitt Romney he plans to cut Social Security and Medicare.

Sunday Late Night: #Occupy Breitbart at CPAC

By: Sunday February 12, 2012 8:01 pm

There’s a big debate over showing this video. Does it give Andrew Breitbart more desired exposure? Or does it expose his antics to a wider audience, thus discrediting him with the general public and cable television producers?

My favorite part is the young woman’s voice at the very end: “I’ve never raped anybody!”

CNN’s Erick Erickson Blasts Grover Norquist for Being Too Tolerant of “Muslims in America”

By: Tuesday February 15, 2011 10:30 am

As scary as CPAC was, keep in mind: it was insufficiently wingnutty for a whole swath of the right-wing movement, as Erick Erickson helpfully reminds us.

I guess they knew where to find him

CPAC Chaos as Ron Paul Wins Straw Poll

By: Sunday February 13, 2011 6:45 am

Chaos erupted at the bedbug-infested CPAC conference tonight when the results of the presidential preference straw poll were announced, and Congressman Ron Paul (R-NotVasectimized) won, for the second year in a row.

Surprised and Stunned I’m sure

Self-delusional forces meet when CPAC meets Donald Trump in the ultimate self-promotion.

The Right-Wing Freakshow That is CPAC Begins

By: Thursday February 10, 2011 10:30 am

I’ve been listening to all the speeches so far, and basically, they ca be summarized thusly: “Obama’s a socialist, taxes are evil, freedom is good, Reagan is teh awesome. Also, U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!” My favorite line so far was from Ron Johnson (T-WI) who bragged about how much Reagan cut taxes for rich people. I’m [...]
