If you haven’t been watching HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver you’re really missing out. Oliver takes advantage of the weekly format to devote long segments to topics that don’t often get a hearing from other late night comedians, let alone the corporate news media — often with hilarious results.
Last night’s episode provided a perfect example as Oliver spent 17 minutes eviscerating the national disgrace that is the U.S. prison system.

Corrections Corporations of America — the nation’s largest private prison company — is bidding to renew its contract for a troubled immigrant detention center in Youngstown, OH.
But a new study uncovered insect-infested and overcrowded cells, understaffed medical personnel, and a ‘warehouse and forget’ attitude at for-profit prisons.

Across the country, politicians have been selling off public assets to private businesses in exchange for hefty campaign contributions and sweetheart deals. The politicians claim they are saving tax dollars, but when the real costs are examined, it’s only the corporations – who back them financially at election time – who are making a financial killing on the deals. This kind of corrupt pay-back to wealthy corporate-CEOs has produced numerous disasters for taxpayers, who end up paying more in the long run.
