JFK & the Anti-Conspiracy Conspiracy

By: Thursday November 21, 2013 4:30 pm

Every day, people are charged with criminal conspiracy in courtrooms around the country. In those cases, a “conspiracy” merely describes a criminal act involving two or more individuals.

Also every day, the establishment media reports on various criminal conspiracies—including racketeering, insider trading, political corruption, sex scandals and murder plots.

Shaving with Occam’s Razor in Activism & Radical Politics

By: Tuesday January 22, 2013 1:05 pm

Conspiracy theories proliferate in the blogosphere, via YouTube videos, and on social media. It concerns me when these theories appear among my activist friends, because I think it makes the entire movement look bad when we stray from fact into fantasy

Late Night: Armageddon Tired of This Mayan Apocalypse. Now Everyone’s Gone to the Movies. Or Santacon!

By: Tuesday December 18, 2012 8:00 pm

NASA continues to peer into the future, claiming that the world did not end on 12.21.12. We’ll address that on 12.22.12. If we’re here. Meanwhile, I got email from JP Sottile at newsvandal with whom I have an ongoing tinfoil millinery competition…

Conservative Conspiracy Theorists Decide BLS Massaged Data to Boost Employment Numbers

By: Friday October 5, 2012 10:20 am

Because data is just fungible to the political leanings of whoever confronts it, we predictably saw a number of conservatives question today’s jobs report, suggesting that the Bureau of Labor Statistics fudged the data to help the President’s re-election campaign. Leading this charge was former GE CEO Jack Welch on Twitter. I think the government should make a deal with Welch – they’ll admit to massaging the data if he cleans up all the PCBs in the Hudson River personally.

On a more serious note, this is really pretty outrageous, and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, whose department includes the BLS, is right to be insulted.

On Ron Paul and Progressivism

By: Wednesday December 28, 2011 7:15 am

I wrote previously about Ron Paul’s newsletters, and I still think there’s reason to condemn not only the writings but the worldview they espouse, one which Paul embraces even as he disavows some of the finer points of the newsletters. But I think there’s more to say about this incident and what it means about American politics.

Loughner’s Conspiracy-Fueled Rampage Has Origins in the Fringe Right

By: Monday January 17, 2011 9:15 am

Republicans have pulled off a neat trick with respect to Jared Loughner. They have worked very hard to characterize him as a “whacko” and a “nutjob” (inadvertently hurting the prospect of a successful prosecution, by the way), going so far as to use the shooting as an opportunity to revamp the nation’s mental health system. I’m all for that, but the ulterior motive from the right is to absolve themselves of blame and marginalize the voices talking about overheated political rhetoric.

FDL Movie Night: JFK and Zapruder–The Day that Changed America

By: Monday November 22, 2010 5:00 pm

Tonight, on the 47th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination of we’re doing something a little different–discussing the Zapruder film and other footage from that day, along with the event itself and how Kennedy’s assassination changed America.

I was two years old then, so all I recall was my dad having me watch the funeral on the teevee. But as I grew up, it was impossible to ignore the impact of that day in Dallas on our collective psyche as a nation. Questioning authority, distrust of government, conspiracy theories, the war in Viet Nam, civil rights, hippies, Nixon (and all he did both good–like EPA and OSHA–and bad). How would thing be different if Kennedy had not been shot? Hard to say.

Late Night: Sometimes a Banana is Actually a Disguised Tactical Nuke

By: Monday July 12, 2010 8:00 pm

I wonder if there’s a Batshit Crazy alert at Michele Bachmann’s campaign headquarters that buzzes every time some other illiterate Republican idiot infringes on her trademarked brand of unfiltered ignorance. If such an alarm did exist, it would be buzzing louder than a stadium full of vuvuzelas today. The culprit? None other than Georgia Rep. [...]
