America has a lot of problems. We still have a broken health care system, persistent high unemployment, and rapidly growing economic inequality. Yet in the last few weeks Congress has managed to grab the top spot on the list of public concerns. Since the government shutdown began, a plurality of Americans now think the number one problem our nation faces is a dysfunctional federal government.

The routine filibuster of nominees now allows a Senate minority to force policy on this country through selective destruction. Senate Republicans are using the filibuster to stop any nominee to lead the Consumer Finical Protection Bureau until and unless the entire program is changed, regardless of who the nominee is or how qualified he or she may be.
