Guess Who Cheers When Cease-Fires Collapse

By: Saturday August 2, 2014 11:25 am

“The Middle East must lead the world in cease-fires. If cease-fires were the road to peace, the Middle East would easily be the most peaceful place on the planet.”

Stop for a moment and appreciate the unfathomable stupidity of that remark. One might as well say the Middle East must lead the world in U.S. weapons imports or the Middle East must lead the world in wars. If these were paths to peace, the Middle East would easily be the most peaceful place on the planet. One might also just as easily say the Middle East must lead the world in the brevity of its cease-fires, with cease-fires elsewhere lasting longer, and with as many broken agreements lying in the sand of the Middle East as anywhere since the last big batch of promises made to Native Americans. One might even just as easily say the Middle East must lead the world in resumptions of fighting, rather than in halts to fighting. But that’s not where Sowell is headed. He’s out to reverse Benjamin Franklin’s notion that there has never been a good war or a bad peace.

Gaza Conflict: 72-Hour Ceasefire; 1451 Palestinians, 59 Israelis Dead

By: Thursday July 31, 2014 5:50 pm

According to Al Jazeera, “Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip, Sami Abu Zuhri, tells AJE that Hamas and all factions in Gaza agree to the United Nations ceasefire for 72 hours starting from 05GMT [midnight ET], as long as the other side abides to it.” Earlier: “UN and US say humanitarian truce in Gaza has been agreed by all sides as Israeli and Palestinian delegations on way to Cairo.”

When Is a Ceasefire Not a Ceasefire?

By: Saturday July 26, 2014 5:00 pm

Today has been a confusing day with news of a 12 hour humanitarian ceasefire followed by talk of a four hour extension that may or may not have been accepted by Israel and was rejected by Hamas – and now, as I write, talk of a new 24 hour ceasefire.

While Israeli forces warned Gazans not to go to their home areas during the ceasefire, many did and the images and news are devastating with over 1000 dead, over 5000 injured and likely more in the rubble.

A few people finally look at themselves in the mirror

Apparently there’s just enough shame on both sides to finally end a binge of violence…at least briefly…maybe.

Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Comes With Pledge from Obama to Seek More Defense Aid for Israel

By: Wednesday November 21, 2012 4:32 pm

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr announced ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. There was no signed agreement. The ceasefire is essentially “quiet in exchange for quiet,” as one Israeli diplomatic source put it.

In the announcement, Clinton reiterated the US’s position that “all rocket attacks must end” and said the US would be working with Egypt in the coming days on the next steps in the process. She said improvement of conditions for the people of Gaza and providing security for the people of Israel would be sought in any long-term agreement and there was “no substitute for a just and lasting peace.”

In Wake of UN Vote, Libya Claims Ceasefire

By: Friday March 18, 2011 6:30 am

Claiming his government “takes great interest in protecting civilians,” Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa has just declared an “an immediate stop to all military operations.”

The announcement was made within the last half-hour, and shortly after statements by both French and British leaders that airstrikes on Libya would begin “within hours.” The airstrikes were authorized by last night’s vote in the United Nations Security Council.
