Bishops vs Catholic Healthcare West, and Why We All Should Worry

Another Roman Catholic bishop — Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix — has revoked the right of a hospital to call itself Catholic over a dispute as to whether a life-saving procedure that results in the end of a pregnancy can ever be acceptable.

Thankfully, the professionals of St. Joseph’s Hospital stood up to the bishop. But this won’t be the last time a hospital is threatened by the hierarchy of the Catholic church, and that should worry everyone, regardless of your beliefs.

It’s never been particularly easy for strong women to use their gifts within the Roman Catholic church’s hierarchical structure and their understanding of the separate roles prescribed for men and women. These days, though, it’s getting even harder — and the debate is not something that affects solely Roman Catholics.

Look at the ongoing health care battle, where the USCCB continues to fight inside and outside the church, to impose their beliefs on the entire US medical system.

Stupak’s Legislative Advisers

For a generation, the name at the top of the list of political heroes of the anti-abortion movement has been Henry Hyde. Bart Stupak wants to put his name at the top of that list for the next generation, and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops is trying their best to make that happen. For the USCCB and for Stupak, the world is a black and white place, and those in authority tell those lower down the totem pole which is which.

God help us.

Catholic Hospitals Back Health Care Bill, Reject Stupak

In a move that could bolster efforts to pass the health care bill, the Catholic Health Association, representing more than 600 Catholic hospitals, endorsed the measure today, rejecting the claims from anti-choice groups that it would publicly fund abortions.
