John Thomas and Hans Burkhardt have a lot in common. For more than 17 years each man had a good paying union job, with health and pension benefits, near San Francisco Bay. Thomas worked as a warehouseman for VWR International, a medical supply company with a warehouse in Brisbane, south of Candlestick Park. Burkhardt also worked as a warehouseman, for BlueLinx, a building products company with a facility across the bay in Newark.

The similarities don’t end there.

More good news for California’s marijuana legalization initiative: UFCW’s Western States Council, representing more than 200,000 union members in the Western US, endorsed Prop 19 yesterday.

Unions Begin to Organize California Marijuana Industry

Employees in California’s huge marijuana industry are starting to join unions. One hundred employees in Oakland pot shops – including Oaksterdam University and Blue Sky Coffee Shop, the establishments of California cannabis initiative lead Richard Lee – will announce tomorrow they will join the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). The workers all signed cards and will have their union recognized under majority sign-up.
