GAP Responds to Racist Graffiti With Humane Awesomeness

Having spent nearly 8 years living in New York City, I know a thing or two about spotting unfortunate DIY revisions on the movie posters and advertising campaigns that litter the walls of the city. You’d be hard pressed to find a subway platform free of hand drawn penises and mustaches and other superfluous commentary.

Often times racist, sexist, and otherwise offensive graffiti goes unnoticed which is why Gap’s recently defaced ad, and the company’s respectful response, is filling the internet with all sorts of holiday cheer.

Unlike many other first world nations, we in America equate minimal life standards that benefit society as a whole and make a place more worth living in– eating, healthcare, education– with a certain level of employment. So, don’t like what you got? Go get a better job loser. Lazy, dumb people get what they deserve. I work for a living. Sound familiar? Dickens had his character Scrooge say back in Victorian England that hungry children might best “starve so as to reduce the surplus population.”

Workers returned Tuesday to the job at Stella D’Oro Biscuit Co. in the Bronx after a judge ordered the company reinstate the 136 employees who had remained strong throughout a brutal 11-month strike. But before they could even walk through the doors, they were greeted with the anti-union response by the company’s private equity firm owners, the 21st century’s mutation of the robber barons: Brynwood Partners announced it would shut down operations in October.

When Brynwood Partners in 2006 took over the Stella D’oro factory in the Bronx, the Wall Street private equity firm had every reason to believe it would be easy to slash the wages, pensions, holidays and sick pay of the 136 bakery workers.

But the takeover brainos forgot one important fact: The workers are represented by a union, Local 50 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM).
