Alan Grayson Fights for Research on Oil Disaster Worker Health

By: Tuesday July 27, 2010 2:10 pm

Last week the House passed the Oil Pollution Research and Development Program Reauthorization Act of 2010, a bill that amends the post-Exxon Valdez legislation in order to fund research on oil spills.

As part of this bill, Rep. Alan Grayson attached two amendments to, in his words, “expand research on the effects of these spills on the human beings assigned to clean them up.” Critically, the amendments target both oil and dispersants — ingredients in the toxic stew affecting BP Oil Disaster cleanup workers.

Maloney Pushes for Enforcement of BP Recovery Worker Respirator Guidelines

By: Monday July 19, 2010 6:30 pm

Earlier this month, Rep. Carolyn Maloney – one of the members of Congress who fought to protect 9/11 cleanup workers, and who is continuing that advocacy for workers cleaning up BP’s oil disaster – called on OSHA to explain how it would enforce the government’s respirator guidelines. Maloney also pressed the agency in charge of worker health and safety for more details on how it’s protecting workers in the Gulf.

OSHA Sitting on BP Coverup Firm’s Worker Health Data

By: Monday July 19, 2010 2:15 pm

Elana Schor, who’s been doing yeoman’s work on reporting about data in the BP oil disaster, published a new piece with Greenwire and the New York Times in which she reveals that OSHA and NIOSH have access to worker health data from BP and its coverup firm, CTEH, but are so far refusing to release the data.

OSHA: Most Recovery Workers Don’t Need Respirators; Dispersants Not a Big Problem

By: Friday July 2, 2010 7:20 am

The government command for the BP oil disaster announced last night its “interim guidance” for recovery worker health and safety, including the (limited) use of respirators. The report was actually released by OSHA and NIOSH, the CDC’s workplace safety group, almost one week ago.
These recommendations come after more than 28,000 people signed Firedoglake’s petition to BP & OSHA demanding workers have access to respirators.

BP Capping Wages for Recovery Workers at $200 per Day

By: Thursday July 1, 2010 12:33 pm

Fishermen contracted by BP in the recovery effort for its recovery effort have their wages capped at $200/day, reports Mother Jones’ Mac McClelland. That wouldn’t be terrible for fishermen, but getting assigned to work is based on a lottery system, making it difficult to get regular work. Worse yet, many fear the system is rigged for favoritism.

Offshore Oil Rig Worker Safety Program Designed by Oil Industry

By: Friday June 25, 2010 3:55 pm

The rules that are supposed to protect the health and safety of oil rig workers were designed 15 years ago by the American Petroleum Institute – the industry and lobbying group for major oil and gas companies. The worst part? Even those regulations are considered “voluntary.”

Gulf Area Ship Captain’s Death Likely a Suicide

The ship captain found dead of a gunshot wound on his boat in Alabama this morning likely committed suicide.

Two Workers Dead in BP Oil Disaster Recovery Effort [Updated]

By: Wednesday June 23, 2010 10:12 am

MSNBC reported this hour that two workers involved in the recovery effort of the BP oil disaster have died. Details are sketchy at this time; the network said that two were dead; one was a cleanup worker, one was a ship captain.

BP Needs to Provide Respirators for Cleanup Workers

By: Tuesday June 22, 2010 12:10 pm

Despite clear evidence of illness from exposure to oil and dispersants, BP refuses to provide respirators to people cleaning up its disaster. Why? Because BP is afraid of the PR impact from images of people wearing this critical safety equipment in pictures and on TV. BP even threatened to fire workers who choose to wear their own. Firedoglake is joining with workers’ rights advocacy group American Rights at Work to petition BP – and government agencies like OSHA and the Department of Labor – to make BP provide respirators to protect cleanup workers in the Gulf of Mexico.

By: Friday June 18, 2010 1:45 pm

Some good news out of Congress about protecting workers involved in the BP oil disaster, as well as offshore oil workers. Rep. George Miller’s House Committee on Education and Labor will hold a hearing on oil worker safety on Wednesday.
