For the second year in a row, the Boy Scouts of America have banned Scouts with a body mass index of 40% from the annual National Scout Jamboree. A BMI of over 32% is considered obese, and 40% is considered morbidly obese by the Centers for Disease Control. For Boy Scouts whose BMI range from 32 and 39.9, the Jamboree’s medical staff requires health history, health data and a recommendation from a personal health care provider, according to the Boy Scouts’ website.

No doubt, a lot of folks are upset regarding the Boy Scouts allowing gay youth to participate. And that’s their right. But this statement by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) last week on the Family Research Council’s Washington Watch takes the cake for the basest, most ignorant thing I have ever heard. It’s simply so sad when some folks will mistake ignorance for morality:

In response to widespread calls for dropping their ban on open participation of gays in Scouting, Boy Scouts of America has presented its leadership with an ugly decision.

This video is yet another one pushed by the Family Research Council claiming that if gays are allowed in the Boy Scouts, there will be more boys at risk of being molested. This time, FRC allows Brian Rushfeldt, head of Canada Family Action do its dirty work.

If there were a Pathfinder merit badge, the Scout leadership would be unable to earn it—they’ve been wandering the wrong trail for many years.

The Boy Scouts of America are proposing to straddle a barbed wire fence. At the same time they propose lifting the ban on gay scouts, they repeat their opposition to LGBT adult scouting leaders. Thus, the gay youngster who works hard to become an Eagle Scout is shown the door by the Scouts on the day he turns 21.
If there was a merit badge for FAIL, the drafters of this proposal have certainly earned it.

Sometime in May, the Boy Scouts of America will decide whether they will allow gays to be members, volunteer leaders, or be employed on the professional staff. The decision may have more to do with funding than with any other policy.

If you don’t know who Zach Wahls is, you had better learn.
He is a young man raised in a lesbian household, intelligent, articulate, and not shy about defending his family or gay equality. Wahls, an Eagle Scout, has also been on the front lines for the lgbt community in the recent Boy Scout ado. In short, he is the religious right’s worst nightmare. And nothing says that more than two interviews this week in which he went head-to-head with Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention.

I have to say that I was not surprised at this news at all. The media maelstrom about this topic rendered the decision by the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board so hot — the here-come-the-pedophiles/America-values-are-being-destroyed camp versus the camp reflecting the increasing acceptance of LGBTs in contemporary American culture — left the Boy Scouts with a no-win situation, if you’re going strictly by PR. So they punted.

OH LORD! This is probably the worse anti-gay video of 2013, but not because it is offensive. It’s because of how badly done it is.
