Virginia Quake Yet Another Wakeup Call for Sleepy Nuclear Regulators

By: Gregg Levine Sunday August 28, 2011 7:40 am

It is now believed that a meltdown in at least one of the reactors started before the tsunami that followed Japan’s March 11 earthquake. In other words, as I reported previously, the earthquake damaged the containment vessel or, more likely, the cooling system before the massive wave knocked out the backup generators and, thus, power to the cooling system. So, the loss of power did not lead to at least some of the meltdown—earthquake damage did.

The Party Line – August 5, 2011: Japan Worries About More Radiation, US Officials Worry About Red Tape

By: Gregg Levine Friday August 5, 2011 3:17 pm

News this week out of Japan that workers at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have detected extremely high levels of radiation in and around reactor 1. The first incident, on August 1, pinned the Geiger counter at 10 sieverts (1000 rem)—yes, that’s as high as the device could measure, so that number is a minimum—and was taken at the base of a ventilation stack. The second reading, the following day, clocked in at five sieverts per hour inside the reactor building.

I have yet to read an explanation for the discovery of the second reading, but the initial, sky-high measurement on Monday has me and many others scratching heads. A thousand rem is not some little ho-hum number. A half-hour of exposure at that level is fatal in a matter of days, I am told. Where did that radiation come from?

Sunday Late Night: “XIV/4 or Bust!”

By: Teddy Partridge Sunday July 31, 2011 8:01 pm

There is now a deal, and Speaker Boehner needs Democratic votes to pass it because of his unruly and recalcitrant TeaParty membership, members of the Progressive Caucus must stop the deal. By stopping the deal at the last minute, the House Progressive Caucus forces President Obama to use his constitutional authority to ignore an illegal law that questions America’s public debt: the debt ceiling.

Kill the deal. Fourteen-four or Bust!

The Party Line – July 22, 2011: Fixing a Hole

By: Gregg Levine Friday July 22, 2011 3:12 pm

Why not take advantage of this situation—which has the added advantage of being the truth—and demand a clean vote, and only a clean vote, on the debt ceiling? Why not tell the American people that if we do this, and keep the money supply cheap and fluid, then government can do what it is supposed to do—what it can do: care for its people, create jobs in a time of need, repair aging infrastructure, research and develop new, greener energy sources (hint, hint—which will not only wean us off of expensive oil and nuclear power, but it could help build the economic engine that could power the US economy for the next decade), and provide a better life for every level of society?

Why Can’t the Department of Justice Investigate as Well as the Hapless Senate?

By: emptywheel Saturday May 14, 2011 7:52 am

What does that say about DOJ, then, that the Senate is doing such a better job at investigating crimes? In just one month’s time the Senate has produced two investigations that have left DOJ–and the SEC and FEC–looking toothless by comparison.

Late Night: Pouting Baby Asks Why Mr. Banana Holder Has His Job

By: Jim White Thursday May 12, 2011 8:00 pm

Why does it take Senator Barbara B to tell Mr. Banana Holder to do his job? Why won’t he do his job the way he should? Why does Mr. Banana Holder even have his job if he won’t punish people who break the law?

Ensign Referred to DoJ for Criminal Investigation

By: David Dayen Thursday May 12, 2011 1:25 pm

Rarely do you see such a strong statement from the Ethics Committee against one of their own, let alone a referral to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.

Ensign Resigned to Avoid Testimony to Senate Ethics Committee

By: David Dayen Friday April 22, 2011 3:40 pm

The FEC is hopelessly broken at this stage, but the Senate Ethics Committee appears to have taken its role seriously, and they aren’t going to bury the report just because Ensign would rather run and hide than face up to his actions. They cannot fully disclose the materials gathered over the course of the investigation, but the public statement has the potential to be damning. And they could choose to make a referral to the Justice Department for criminal charges as well.

2010 Senate Races: Last PPP Polls Show GOP Gains, But Dems Keep Majority

By: Jon Walker Monday November 1, 2010 8:00 am

If these races break exactly as PPP polling dictates, the Democratic caucus would be reduced to only 51 members. On the other hand, if the three toss-up races each brake for the Democrat instead of the Republican, the Dem caucus would be down to 54 members–still a substatial margin by historical measures.

It appears that Carly Fiorina is Christine O’Donnell with less Jesus and more work history.
