President Obama made his strongest comments since 2008 on gun control in a speech before the National Urban League last night, arguing for a variety of limits on gun proliferation.

One of the many things I find perplexing about Mitt Romney is not that he distorts the truth, which most candidates do, but that he says things which can easily be proven false. The most recent example is Romney strongly implying the guns used in the Aurora tragedy were obtain illegally so he can dodge the question about gun regulation.

It galls me that when there are human tragedies of the kind that occurred in the Aurora, Colorado movie theatre this past week that so-called “Christians” turn up on the airwaves not with words of consolation and spiritual solace, but messages of fear and damnation. What pathetic, sad lives people like Truth in Action Ministries’ Jerry Newcombe lead. The cleric bleated this unforgivable crap on an American Family Association radio show:

New gun control legislation will not pass this Congress. I’m confident saying it won’t pass the next Congress either, or the next. In essence, new gun control legislation will never pass Congress again, as long as this generation of Democrats remains in power.

This weekend I spent an indecent amount of time on teh internets
debating arguing with people men regarding their belief that, if only one person had been packing heat at Batman, things would have been so so much better. Forget for a moment that James Holmes was carrying a virtual armory on him, was decked out in full SWAT gear, had the element of surprise, gas canisters, and a well thought out plan of attack upon a darkened theater where the audience had already escaped reality and been lulled into the story. Forget, also, the massive blind panic that immediately followed with people climbing over each other, sprawling on the floor to avoid being hit, the screaming, the bodies, the blood, the smoke, the noise … the sheer horror of being caught up in your worst nightmare.
And yet I am led to understand that one person, who just happened to be carrying a piece would have calmly and with great presence of mind taken out the shooter just like he was Jason Bourne or whoever that guy is that Bruce Willis plays in those shitty Die Hard movies.

In the wake of a shooting tragedy, it is only because of the dedicated work of gun control supporters that the implement used in the tragedy even gets mentioned. The President in his remarks this morning on the incident in Aurora, Colorado, referred to a “gunman” but not the guns he used. It’s proper and I suppose respectful to give words of contrition and sympathy as the head of state. But I wish that someday, we’d hear something in the wake of yet another tragedy like this more akin to what Michael Bloomberg had to say.
