When Ann Romney haughtily declared this morning that “You People” had better well quit nosing around in her family’s affairs already, I was reminded of my mother’s perennial and typically generous comment regarding couples who were either startlingly unattractive or otherwise even less appealing together than the sum of their parts: “Well, at least they found each other.”

“You know, you should really look at where Mitt has led his life, where he’s been financially. He’s a very generous person . . .” said Ann Romney, rather sensibly. When pushed, however, she backed off quickly. Why not release more tax returns? “”Because there are so many things that will be open again for more attack. . . . We’ve given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and about how we live our life.”
She’s wrong about the latter but dead right about the former. If you want to understand someone’s moral values, it makes sense to look at how they lead their life by the checks they write. But rather than ask for the whole truckload of check stubs, I’d settle for seeing some more tax returns.

Ann Romney, in her very humble common-sense typical-mom kind of way of speaking, wants you to know that she and Mitt will not be spending as much time off-shore as their money and the Obamas do.

Ann Romney, the wife of the Republican President candidate Mitt Romney, has suffered from multiple sclerosis for years. She claims taking part in dressage, aka horse ballet, has greatly helped relieve the debilitating symptoms of her disease. However, few Americans with MS can afford that option, yet Mitt Romney strong opposes making medical marijuana available, even though studies suggest it helps alleviate the pain from MS.

Isn’t it interesting how the US establishment media, even as it went out of its way to push the Republicans’ distorted talking points on Hilary Rosen’s comments concerning Ann Romney, simultaneously ignored things that might not reflect well on Mrs. Romney or her very wealthy husband — things like the full history of her birthday party host Fred Malek, aka Nixon’s Jew Counter?

It’s almost poetic that this year’s Equal Pay Day—the one day of the year when Americans are supposed to reflect on the value (and undervaluing) of women’s work—coincided with the media firestorm surrounding the American stay-at-home-mom. The “controversy” over Ann Romney’s decision to stay home rather than work a “regular” job should highlight some of the continuing struggles of women to be valued and respected for their work, in and out of the home.
