As Paul Ryan Lines Up Behind Rahm, the Scheme to Privatize Chicago Schools Becomes Clear

By: Tuesday September 11, 2012 7:07 am

Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan has twisted the knife just a bit more in an attempt to draw out President Obama on the Chicago Teachers Union strike, now entering its second day. He told a fundraiser in Portland, OR yesterday that he endorsed the position in the strike of the former chief of staff of Barack Obama:

Our Vision for Improving Public Education

By: Tuesday July 13, 2010 10:00 am

At the AFT convention last week in Seattle, I outlined a vision to save public education. Our vision is:

  • That every neighborhood school should be an excellent school that all families know they can count on, every year, for all of their children.
  • To build on what works, and replicate it for all kids, in all schools, in all communities.
  • Of schools where good teachers can work together to meet each child’s individual needs, where students develop their unique talents through a well-rounded curriculum, where all children have the support they need to reach their full potential.
  • For teachers to get the necessary support to constantly improve, in an environment in which students have what they need to succeed.

That’s in sharp contract to the vision of what I call the blame the teacher” crowd, which has made some inroads among politicians and the mainstream media. Their proposed solutions inevitably come down to affixing blame – usually on teachers – rather than fixing schools.

Please Welcome Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers

Randi Weingarten is the President of the American Federation of Teachers, the union that represents more than 1.4 million educators. Obama Applauds Mass Firing of Teachers

By: Wednesday March 3, 2010 6:55 am

A wholesale firing of an entire school; the only ones left in the entire high school are the food service workers and the custodians. So why is Obama and his administration going out of its way to praise this mass firing?

Why Working Families and Our Unions Support Biden

By: Thursday August 28, 2008 1:30 pm

As media pundits have noted, Sen. Barack Obama’s selection of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden adds many years of foreign policy experience to the ticket.

Less well-known is Biden’s long support for working families and their unions. America’s union movement, Biden has said, is

the only thing that keeps the barbarians at the gate.

Greedy Troglodytes Attack Teachers

By: Thursday March 13, 2008 10:30 am

What is it about teachers that reactionaries don’t like?

Maybe it’s because an educated electorate poses a threat to those who seek to control the public—”Danger: Educated Union Member” is one of our favorite phrases—and so teachers pose an easy target for the antediluvians among us. (Remember John Stossel’s ABC trash piece, “Stupid in America”?).

The success of teachers’ unions also draws particular ire from the anti-education crowd.
