Is James Dobson Repenting for His 2007 Interview With Newt Gingrich?

By: Friday January 20, 2012 11:55 am

James Dobson’s slam on Newt Gingrich at the recent behind-closed-doors meeting of evangelical Christian leaders grabbed a lot of attention in the press, but no one seems to remember that these two have a past. In 2007, Gingrich went on Dobson’s radio program to confess his history of marital infidelity, and received the blessing of numerous TheoCon leaders for doing so.

Now, though, Dobson appears to have led the charge against Gingrich in that meeting of religious conservatives. Is Dobson repenting for having given Gingrich a platform to try to rebuild in image back in 2007?

Gingrich Decides the Real Victim Is Gingrich

By: Friday January 20, 2012 8:35 am

Newt Gingrich’s symphony of resentment at the media last night for daring to bring up the question of his marital infidelity was utterly predictable. And yet, mostly because of CNN debate moderator John King’s inability to follow up in any way, it was wildly successful at neutralizing the issue, and will propel Gingrich to victory in South Carolina on Saturday.

Late Night FDL: Conservative “Redemption” Story a Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card for Overmoralizing Philanderers

By: Thursday January 19, 2012 8:00 pm

The story from Evan McMorris-Santoro here, about conservatives turning up their nose and saying “Meh” to the upcoming Marianne Gingrich revelations, even the open marriage stuff, is completely anecdotal. But it fits with a general story about redemption that conservative Christians often tell themselves to allow for a candidate who fails them morally but still offers them low taxes and a strong national defense.

Ensign Report Shows Sexual Harassment, Cluelessness About the Law

By: Sunday May 15, 2011 5:20 pm

The John Ensign report from the Senate Ethics Committee is really a sad piece of pulp fiction. You have a US Senator in a strong position of power essentially bullying a female subordinate into an affair, refusing to give up on it after being caught several times, finally trying to cover up the evidence of the affair and pay off the participants, and lying and covering his tracks as the plot slowly unravels. That’s about it in a nutshell.

But the details are even seamier.

Ensign Referred to DoJ for Criminal Investigation

Rarely do you see such a strong statement from the Ethics Committee against one of their own, let alone a referral to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.

Ensign Resigned to Avoid Testimony to Senate Ethics Committee

By: Friday April 22, 2011 3:40 pm

The FEC is hopelessly broken at this stage, but the Senate Ethics Committee appears to have taken its role seriously, and they aren’t going to bury the report just because Ensign would rather run and hide than face up to his actions. They cannot fully disclose the materials gathered over the course of the investigation, but the public statement has the potential to be damning. And they could choose to make a referral to the Justice Department for criminal charges as well.

John Ensign Scandal: Federal Investigators On Candid Camera

By: Saturday May 8, 2010 12:54 pm

It’s simply incredible that Ensign still has a job, not because of the adultery, but because of the clear corruption of his dealings. But I don’t know how much longer that will last, with investigators poking around.
