Matthew Harwood, Counterterrorism in the Twilight Zone

By: Tuesday July 9, 2013 7:00 pm

Since 9/11, American law enforcement has taken a disproportionate interest in American Muslims across the country, seeing a whole community as a national security threat, particularly in California and New York City. But here’s the thing: the facts that have been piling up ever since that date don’t support such suspicion. Not at all.

Rainbow Overboard: Carnival’s Faux Pas

By: Wednesday November 28, 2012 4:08 pm

A travel agency called Al and Chuck Travel chartered a cruise on a Carnival ship with special performances by some of the popular drag queen stars of the Reality TV program Ru-Paul’s Drag Race. Six days before departure, ticket holders received a letter from Carnival Vice-President Vicky Rey informing them that passengers would not be permitted to dress in drag.

Eleven years after the attacks on 9-11 and the subsequent Ground Zero volunteer cleanup that left thousands sickened, the federal government finally added cancer to the list of illnesses linked to the attacks.

Bush Administration Ignored Multiple Warnings of 9-11, Claimed Bin Laden Attack Fake Cover for Saddam

By: Tuesday September 11, 2012 8:50 am

Today is the day in our quadrennial orgy of political campaigning where the two sides lay down their arms and grow silent in commemoration of 9/11. Ads get pulled, candidates lay wreaths, the military gets praised. Therefore, it took serious guts for the New York Times to publish an op-ed from Kurt Eichenwald, based on his reporting for a book called “500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars,” which shows the extent to which the Bush Administration simply ignored warnings about an impending attack from Al Qaeda.

9-11 CIA Documents Reveal Numerous Pre-Attack Warnings

By: Wednesday June 20, 2012 7:15 pm

A new trove of Clinton and Bush-era documents from the CIA have been released to the National Security Archive, and they show that the CIA had a bead on Osama bin Laden a year before 9/11, but did not receive adequate funding from the Bush White House in the early months of his first term to pursue him. In fact, they had to stop monitoring him.

Tea Party Debate Shows America What Everyone Can’t Stand About the Tea Party

By: Tuesday September 13, 2011 8:15 am

Everyone’s talking about this exchange from last night’s CNN/Tea Party Express debate (I assume the CNN/MoveOn debate is next week), where the crowd cheers the prospect of allowing an uninsured man to die. And I’ll get to that in a moment. But perhaps just as rotten was when the crowd booed Ron Paul, who’s supposed to be a kind of Tea Party godfather, for daring to suggest that not every Muslim is responsible for 9-11. Beyond the crassness of this incident, it should definitively end the speculation that the Tea Party is anything other than an outgrowth of the Republican Party.

9-11′s Surveillance State Legacy

By: Tuesday August 30, 2011 4:25 pm

We had one moment where this was subject to any debate at all, during the fight over the FISA amnesty legislation. But that was really about a small portion of the total data collection. Most of the surveillance remains a secret. Ron Wyden and Mark Udall tried to tease out a little more this summer, when they tried to get the intelligence community to admit to how they were misinterpreting the Patriot Act to allow for more data collection. But that never went anywhere. From NSA surveillance to national security letters to the AT&T room on Folsom Street in San Francisco, what bits and pieces we do know about point to a giant network Hoovering up every piece of information you let out into the world digitally.

Bipartisan Support for Phone Hacking Investigation of News Corp

By: Wednesday July 13, 2011 5:10 pm

Peter King (R-NY), a frequent guest on News Corp’s cable news properties (up to this point), just called for an FBI investigation into allegations that the company hacked into the voicemail accounts of 9-11 victims. Given King’s constant invocation of 9-11, only rivaled by Rudy Giuliani, this isn’t all that surprising.

King is not alone. Today, Senators Frank Lautenberg, Robert Menendez and Jay Rockefeller have sought investigations from the Justice Department or Congress.
