You may have thought that Karen Handel, who was to public policy at the Susan G. Komen Foundation what Wille E. Coyote is to rocketry, waddled away from the Komen Foundation last week in disgrace, but you would be wrong wrong wrong.

The AP is reporting that an announcement from the White House is coming soon on a “compromise” with the Catholic bishops over the requirement to provide insurance that covers contraception.
I’ve got an idea of how that announcement will end . . .
Santorum Questions Women in Frontline Military Roles Because ‘Other Types of Emotions Are Involved’ |
| By: Pam Spaulding Friday February 10, 2012 6:08 am |
Please tell me that I didn’t just step out of a time machine. I guess I probably didn’t travel too far back in time, given we’re talking about Republicans in the 2012 GOP Clown Car cycle, because this is what Rick Santorum said just yesterday in an interview with CNN’s John King about the Pentagon considering relaxing rules regarding women and frontline roles in combat.

What is astounding is the political tone-deafness that these Republicans have — what votes are there to gain by beating up access to contraception when 98% of Americans use it? These personhood amendments failed miserably, most notably in Mississippi, which clearly isn’t some liberal bastion. People of all political persuasions (some with guilt, some without it) are having sex and are using birth control, period. Any attempt to take it away, to in essence tell people when they can and cannot procreate, is a death wish. But it continues.
Catholic Bishops Oppose “Hawaii Compromise” on Birth Control Access |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday February 8, 2012 10:30 am |
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has reportedly rejected a proposed compromise with the Obama Administration on birth control access rules for religiously affiliated institutions. Under the “Hawaii compromise” any exempt religious organization would have to tell enrollees how they could directly access contraceptive services from their insurance company. But advocates of ensured access don’t want to force employees to beg their employers for a right they should have.

| By: David Dayen Wednesday February 8, 2012 6:50 am |
An energized and battle-tested Planned Parenthood will issue a call to action to their members today to defend the President’s birth control policy and urge the White House not to give in to the fierce lobbying from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops by altering the policy in any way detrimental to universal access. The organization will send a message from Cecile Richards to all its members on the issue today, FDL News has leaned.
White House Signals Potential Compromise on Birth Control Access for Religiously Affiliated Institutions |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday February 7, 2012 3:45 pm |
Administration officials are preparing the ground for some kind of rollback on universal access for birth control, after the US Conference of Catholic Bishops turned the issue into a major controversy. Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney hinted at changes to the regulations and other Admin sources dropped hints.
Karen Handel Leaves Susan G. Komen Foundation |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday February 7, 2012 9:15 am |
As expected by TBogg yesterday, Karen Handel, the anti-abortion activist who wound up as a Vice President for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, has resigned from the organization. She leaves behind an angry resignation letter and a discredited organization.

The Catholic Church is very unhappy that the Obama Administration is going to shove birth control down their throat by making them provide contraception benefits in their health plans for their employees, most of whom are already using it and then conveniently forgetting to mention it in confession. And when the Catholic Church gets fighting mad they turn to rageaholic Bill Donohue of the Catholic League.
Karen Handel Is The Komen’s Katrina |
| By: TBogg Monday February 6, 2012 2:10 pm |
It should come as no surprise that someone would leak internal documents showing that Handel was behind the whole Planned Parenthood debacle and defended it to the bitter end, even after it was clear it would seriously damage Komen.
