In recent years, many policymakers have set their sights on trying to attract entrepreneurs and new start-ups to their communities and states. In some cases they have used that goal to justify tax cuts, which some lawmakers think will be an inducement for innovative entrepreneurs. Scott Walker is among the Governors who are seeking to promote development of new businesses and employing tax cuts as a tactic to pursue that goal.

In about the least surprising development imaginable, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker turns out to to be not only surrounded by crooks and grifters, but dumb and bigoted ones at that. Well, duh. Just as every other Republican “star” has similarly flamed out in some tawdry variation of the same theme, from New Jersey to Florida and Virginia to North Carolina, Walker is simply performing to type: when one holds the very fact of government in contempt philosophically, choosing a career in it anyway is simply something only a second-rate grifter would ever do.

One of the great progressive reforms of the last century was the passage of open public records laws, both on the state level and the federal Freedom of Information Act. Unfortunately it seems that some state officials aren’t willing to follow the rules.

Our political press likes to talk about maneuvering and posturing as if it’s just peacocks strutting around, as if the decisions politicians make are entirely about them and the show they’re giving and getting.

A secret investigation into corruption in Wisconsin has reportedly expanded into the 2011 and 2012 recall elections and involves aides to Governor Scott Walker. Former assistant US Attorney Francis Schmitz was recently appointed as special prosecutor. The investigation includes a focus on possible campaign finance violations for the Wisconsin recall effort.
