Five Blackwater Worldwide security guards charged in the shooting deaths of 14 Iraqi civilians last year turned themselves in to federal authorities in Salt Lake City this morning, according to their attorneys, and the Justice Department unsealed a 35-count indictment against them.

I’m beginning to think that KBR may just be The Worst Company On Earth. Not only have they poisoned troops, but they’ve electrocuted them as well. But it’s not just troops. Remember when a bunch of KBR contractors in Iraq gang-raped a female coworker, and the company imprisoned her in a shipping container and told her to stay in Iraq and keep her mouth shut? Or when their subcontractor imprisoned 1,000 Asian workers in a windowless warehouse near the Baghdad airport?

Accountability may be knocking for KBR after the deaths of American servicepeople in Iraq.  

We’ve had Sen. Byron Dorgan here at FDL, and highlighted a number of DPC hearings on the subject of KBR’s shoddy electrical contracting work in Iraq.   Both the Senate DPC under Dorgan and the House Government Oversight Committee under Waxman have pushed oversight on this issue, among many other hearings…

The U.S. officials said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke with al-Maliki on Wednesday to try to resolve the issue of legal immunity for U.S. contractors working in Iraq.

Since December 2003, the Democratic Policy Committee (DPC), which I chair, has held seventeen oversight hearings to examine waste, fraud, and corruption in Iraq. Last Friday, I held a hearing to investigate contractor KBR’s tragic failure to correct faulty electrical work at U.S. military installations in Iraq, even after the United States Army issued a bulletin stating that improper wiring by contractors had resulted in the electrocution deaths of several soldiers.
