No political stuff for me today; I’m just going to focus entirely on doing my subversive liberal best to undermine Christmas.

I posted this picture at my place the other day, but it’s too heartwarming not to share it more widely. It’s from the marquee sign of the Baptist church at the bottom of our hill. As you can see, they’re outraged that the forces of Secular Humanism have so completely prevailed in this country that “Christmas” has become a dirty word — indeed, it is now the “C-Word.”

As you are no doubt aware, we liberal secularists have been fighting a long and lonely war against the forces of Santafascism for several years now, but it looks like we finally have some powerful (and unexpected) backup:

An Imperial Stormtrooper commando broke into Santa’s Factory on the North Pole yesterday evening, killing an undetermined number of elves, arresting the owner and confiscating his sled.

I was trying to decide what to talk about today that hadn’t already been done, and done better, by somebody else.

I could bring to your attention a horrifying story from Salon about the CIA’s illegally torturing and jailing an innocent man for nearly two years — a story that America’s mainstream press could have covered themselves, but won’t touch.

I could mention this excellent E&P article from last year on how the sporting press for years largely looked the other way with regard to steroid use right up until the Balco scandal made that impossible to continue. (Hmmmm — American media ignores a key story that’s right under their noses. I think we have a pattern here.)

Congress has passed the “hooray for Christmas” act. Who says they can’t get anything done?

You can always tell when Christmas is coming up when you’ve got wingnut rellies with e-mail accounts. About a month to six weeks beforehand, charming little propaganda missives, either carefully crafted in various wingnut-welfare-supported sheltered workshops or homebrewed elaborations on something Bill O’Reilly or NewsMax spouted three years ago, start coming into your in box.

You know the kind.
