McCain: Only Failed CEOs Who Work For Me Should Get Golden Parachutes

By: Blue Texan Monday September 22, 2008 12:01 pm

McSame, campaigning in Scranton this morning, said:

“We cannot have taxpayers footing the bill for bloated golden parachutes like we see in the Lehman Bros. bankruptcy, where the top executives are asking for $2.5 billion in bonuses after they ran the company into the ground.”

No, we cannot. Except of course when those top executives work for John McSame.

Earlier in the day McCain was asked if Carly Fiorina, one of McCain’s top economic

News That’s Being Shoved Aside for Yammerings about a Former Politician

By: Phoenix Woman Tuesday August 12, 2008 11:14 am

Here’s some of what you’re probably not hearing much about because the press is too busy freaking out over a guy who exited the primaries in the dead of winter. Nothing much: The end of the Endangered Species Act, the non-rarity of the “rare” strain of anthrax used in the anthrax attacks, the McCain campaign’s close lobbyist ties to the Republic of Georgia, and a ton of hinky donations to McCain from Jordanians.

The Stuff They Won’t Tell You

Ben Smith watched the Judy Woodruff interview of John Edwards, and noticed this:

He also, in explaining his view that his dalliance could remain
private, cited Republican John McCain’s reported affair at the end of
his first marriage almost three decades ago.

“What I was thinking was this was something that was personal to my own family,” … He recalled having heard McCain “talk about the mistakes that he’s made in his past with respect to his first marriage.” Funny how ABC chose not to transcribe that part of the interview.

Olympics Day 1: Moral Gymnastics Competition

By: Eli Friday August 8, 2008 6:01 pm

Today, as you may have heard, is the first day of the 2008 Olympics. I usually find the Olympics pretty boring, but this year’s edition features an exciting new event: Moral Gymnastics, and the Republicans are heavily favored to walk away with the gold.

Who Did John Edwards Really Cheat On?

By: Swopa Friday August 8, 2008 3:25 pm

A few more thoughts on John Edwards’ admission today, since it’s probably futile to bother discussing anything else… First of all, anybody think it’s a coincidence that Barack Obama just happened to leave the continental U.S. for a week’s vacation the day Edwards went public? Yeah, me neither.

John Edwards Admits To Affair

By: Jane Hamsher Friday August 8, 2008 12:29 pm

Edwards did play the family card quite heavily during his campaign, and if he’d gotten the nomination, the Democrats would be sunk right now and we’d be looking at four years of John McCain. So on that count, I’m profoundly grateful that he didn’t get it. He was risking a lot for all of us by doing this stuff and running at the same time. It was incredibly stupid.

Sunday Late Nite: Veep Gossip Roundup

Stephanopoulos extracts a paean to Tim Russert from John Edwards, then launches into a substantive discussion of tax policy, taking up Edwards’ challenge to have more robust conversation about real issues that affect real people.

The Turning Point the Clinton Campaign Post-Mortems Miss

By: Swopa Sunday June 8, 2008 4:06 pm

From Daily Kos to the New York Times to points beyond, political commentators have spent today spitting out post-mortems for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. By now, the standard criticisms are familiar enough to be unenlightening. Nearly all of the retrospectives, though, miss a key turning point in October 2007.

A Look Around News Round-Up

By: Christy Hardin Smith Monday May 26, 2008 2:04 pm

Thought I’d catch up on a bit of blog and news reading, and take everyone along for the ride: Sean Reagan dipped his toe into the flip-flopping waters of McCain. And it’s quite an interesting glimpse below the surface. Speaking of McCain, the NYTimes reports some panic among the GOP upper crusts….

The Impact Of Our Nation’s Choices

By: Christy Hardin Smith Friday May 16, 2008 5:03 am

Wednesday, as most of you already know, John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama for the presidency. There is no shortage of articles out this morning digging through the fine print on the endorsement, the potential attached strings (nothing substantiated), the potential split between John and Elizabeth’s support (again nothing substantiated), and what it means for the Democratic party in really broad and highly speculative terms. But what none of the reports that I have seen address is the substance — the gut and heart level issues — that Edwards talked about in his endorsement speech….
