Classy with several K’s as ever Steve King.

Reid: Rubio’s DREAM Act Doesn’t Have Any Language to Support |
| By: David Dayen Monday May 14, 2012 11:40 am |
Harry Reid, appearing on Univision, said that Marco Rubio doesn’t even have legislative language for his rumored version of the DREAM Act, and that he couldn’t possibly assess its chances without something to look at.
Beyond May Day, Frustrated Immigrant Movement Forges Ahead |
| By: Michelle Chen Saturday May 5, 2012 1:25 pm |
May Day has historically had a pro-migrant message, from its origins in 19th-century working-class Chicago, to its revival in 2006 as a day of protest for immigration reform. But this year, even with the added momentum of Occupy Wall Street, the pro-immigrant mobilizations were relatively modest, according to advocates, though the struggles facing immigrants are growing more dire.
Women + Immigrants = Double War |

If there’s one thing Republicans hate more than women, it’s undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrant women? Fuhgeddaboutit.
A little common deception amongst friends |
| By: Attaturk Friday April 27, 2012 1:30 am |
Oft-mentioned potential VP nominee Marco Rubio is, by Republican standards, a moderate on immigration. Perhaps in large part because of a portion of his family’s history he may not wish to dwell on. It seems that his maternal grandfather came to the United States illegally during the Batista Regime. Three years later when Castro came to power he saw an opportunity and went back to Cuba to try to take advantage.
Three years later, and now disaffected, the same grandfather hopped on to an airplane for the United States without a visa.
Supreme Court Hears Arguments On Arizona’s Anti-Immigrant Law |
| By: Scarecrow Wednesday April 25, 2012 1:00 pm |
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments today on the constitutionality of Arizona’s anti-immigration law. The case is important not only because of the discriminatory treatment it has fostered against Hispanics and others but because it has become a model for other states in their efforts to harrass and intimidate anyone suspected of being an undocumented immigrant. Initial reports suggest the Justices did not agree with the federal preemption arguments.
Net Immigration From Mexico Now About Zero |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday April 24, 2012 10:40 am |
Immigration from Mexico is down significantly thanks in large part to the poor economy in the United States. According to new analysis by the Pew Hispanic Center, recent net migration from Mexico is now zero. This fact should lessen the negative politics of immigration in the short run and affect projections of voting patterns in the long run.
Obama Promises to Take On Immigration Reform in First Year of Second Term |
| By: David Dayen Saturday April 14, 2012 4:00 pm |
President Obama told a Spanish-language television network, in an interview that will be aired this Sunday, that he would try to pass comprehensive immigration reform “in the first year of my second term.” When running for President in 2008, then-Senator Obama said basically the same thing, promising to tackle immigration reform in his first year in office. That never happened, as health care and the economy dominated the first year of policymaking.
The War on Immigrant Women: Part of the Sweeping Crusade Against the Fundamental Rights of All Women |

Araceli doesn’t go out alone anymore. She is frightened of ongoing harassment by local police, whom she used to trust to protect her. Trini drops her two children off at school every morning unsure if she will be there at pickup time. Other mothers in her communities have, after all, been “disappeared,” taken from their homes, and families, without warning or trace.
Easter Eve Hypocrisy from the Catholic Bishops |
| By: Peterr Saturday April 7, 2012 9:04 am |
On the Eve of Easter, the purity patrol of the Roman Catholic church is roaring along. Vicki Kennedy (Ted’s widow) had her invitation to speak at a Catholic commencement yanked, and Compañeros, an immigrant services group in Colorado, had their funding pulled because they are affiliated with a larger immigrant rights organization that includes LGBTs. Lovely.
It’s especially lovely, considering that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops themselves recently submitted a brief to the US Supreme Court, co-signed by an organization that ordains women, LGBTs, and married people, that supports marriage equality, and that views women as capable of making their own decisions with regard to abortion. (That would be my own denomination, the ELCA.)
Did I say “lovely”? I’m sorry — I meant “hypocritical.” My bad.
Happy Easter.
