Oakland PD’s Violent Assault on the Constitution and Occupy Inflicts Severe Brain Injuries on Marine Iraq War Veteran

By: Thursday October 27, 2011 6:14 pm

Tuesday night Scott Olsen stood on a street in Oakland as an American citizen, exercising his right as specified in the First Amendment to the Constitution that he pledged his life to uphold as a US Marine. And Tuesday night, as he lawfully exercised the Constitutional right he risked his life to defend in Marine uniform, someone wearing the uniform of the Oakland PD, or the “law” enforcement agencies Oakland summoned up to squash lawful protest, fired the round that felled Scott Olsen.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Will Potter, Green Is the New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement under Siege

By: Saturday June 11, 2011 1:59 pm

Why is the US Department of Justice locking away non-violent eco-activist prisoners in domestic GITMOS? Why did the US Government spend vast resources on a provocateur named Anna to set up prosecution of Eric McDavid? Eric was her lover, he along with another young man was arrested right after they stepped out of a hardware store with materials for a bomb making plot designed and instigated by the FBI’s paid informant and provocateur, Anna. At a time when we all know corporatist banksters have done trillions of damage to America’s economy and walked free, why was Eric McDavid sentenced to Federal prison for over twenty years on terrorism charges when he hadn’t actually destroyed anything? How did Marie Mason – an eco-activist who actually had carried out property destruction – come to be sentenced to over twenty years in prison on “terror” charges?

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Antonia Juhasz, Black Tide: The Devastating Impact of the Gulf Oil Spill

By: Sunday May 1, 2011 1:59 pm

Antonia Juhasz’ Black Tide drills into our past, our present, and all too possibly, our future. Black Tide gives us the chance to learn from Antonia’s years of expert work on the oil industry and the industry’s effects upon us all and the planet we all depend on. This book goes far beyond history and policy – the book draws on the months Antonia spent with Gulf Coast residents living with the consequences of the oil catastrophe BP and partners brought upon them and the Gulf one year and thirteen days ago. The result is a powerful, compelling work of non-fiction that reads like a novel. But unlike a novel, Black Tide brings us into the lives of real people, and Antonia brings them to us in their own words.

Why Fukushima’s “Spent” Fuel Rods Will Continue to Catch Fire

By: Tuesday March 15, 2011 7:13 pm

Yesterday the spent fuel rod pool at Fukushima Daiichi reactor 4 caught fire. About that time instruments at the plant showed an exponential increase in radiation levels. After the fire was quenched, radiation levels fell. In the hour before I sat down to write this, there was an explosion at the same spent fuel rod pool. As I write, another fire is burning there. NHK reports the radiation level – 300 to 400 milliSieverts – is so high that firefighters cannot approach the area.

Nuke Engineer: Fuel Rod Fire at Fukushima Reactor “Would Be Like Chernobyl on Steroids”

By: Monday March 14, 2011 2:00 pm

When the nuclear engineer from an identical plant states there’s any possibility of such a catastrophe, Washington, we have a problem. Chernobyl’s contamination settled upon people and nations thousands of miles from that reactor’s location. How far would “Chernobyl on steroids” travel? And where are the up to 20 years of reactor no 1 spent fuel rods that could cause such a problem?

Before the Sierra Club’s New Director Invites Guests Over, He Needs to Clean House

By: Thursday June 17, 2010 2:20 pm

While I’m pleased to see Michael wants to welcome Jane Hamsher and other progressives to the Sierra Club under his watch, I’m waiting for Michael to do what any good host does before he throws a housewarming party: clean the house.

OSHA Says Cleanup Workers Don’t Need Breathing Protection: Same Thing They Said For 9/11 Clean Up

By: Friday June 4, 2010 4:40 pm

OSHA’s director claims the workers trying to clean up BP’s oilpocalypse don’t need breathing protection. Hey, at least OSHA’s consistent. OSHA pretended the 9/11 rescue and clean up workers didn’t need respiratory protection. We all know how well that worked out. Now that EPA OK’d dumping a million gallons of incredibly toxic dispersant into the Gulf, NMS OK’d the catastrophically negligent and incompetent drilling/clean-up permits, and the Coast Guard’s OK’d their owner BP’s orders to detain and repel media from BP’s crime scene, why should we expect OSHA to do any better? As with all the other Executive Branch “regulatory” agencies, the corporatist servants revolving through the Oval Office long ago perverted the agency’s mission from one of public protection into one of permitting pollution.

Memorial Day Memory Hole: After Israel Forgets “Exodus”, White House Forgets “Shores of Tripoli”. Will Obama Remember NATO?

By: Monday May 31, 2010 7:15 pm

Last night, Israel’s leaders and commandos forgot the past Leon Uris drew upon for his fictionalized celebration of their nation’s creation. The IDF’s witless, merciless repetition of their nation’s pre-history ensured predictably tragic consequences for the humanitarian flotilla attempting to penetrate Israel’s deadly Gaza blockade. As of this writing, the IDF are reported to have killed up to twenty and wounded scores more civilians aboard the unarmed flotilla. In this lethal campaign of attacks on unarmed vessels in international waters, Israel’s leaders and armed forces aped the the British Navy’s successful prevention of the Exodus’ attempt to break the British blockade of Palestine in 1947.

Mud in Louisiana’s Eye: Jindal and Nungesser Mix a Toxic Recipe for the Wetlands

By: Thursday May 27, 2010 7:30 pm

Today the Coast Guard took a break from following BP’s orders to chase the press away from BP’s crime scenes, long enough to approve wasting millions of dollars building toxic mud pies that will starve or further poison Gulf wetlands. Yep, the Coast Guard’s throwing a poisoned life preserver to two Republican Louisiana pols who’ve spent years scheming to build a wall of toxic mud pies intended to cut off Louisiana’s wetlands from the tides the wetlands require for survival .

BP’s Corexit Increases Uptake of Endocrine Disruptors in Fish – What Will It Do to People?

By: Monday May 24, 2010 4:21 pm

Today, BP claims it must keep hiding dispersing its oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico with its subsidiary’s product, Corexit, because the alternative dispersants could be endocrine disruptors. One nasty form of endocrine disruptor is called PAH. In the real world, we’ve known since 2004 that the very same Corexit that BP has been [...]
