About Me:
Howie Klein spent much of his life wandering around the world living in places like Afghanistan, Nepal, Holland and Morocco. He moved backed to America when Richard Nixon resigned and promptly helped start the first punk rock radio show in the country and then a DIY punk rock record label. His adventures in the music business ended a couple of years ago when he retired as president of Reprise Records. He began blogging almost immediately, starting Down With Tyranny. Jane taught him html while he held one of her dogs at a party. He is a raw foodist, lives in L.A., swims and hikes every day, thinks Howard Dean could be a president as great as FDR and will never be completely happy until Bush and Cheney are behind bars.

What About The Better In ‘More And Better Democrats’?

By: Howie Klein Wednesday May 14, 2008 3:45 pm

Today in the FDL discussion of the victory in Mississippi yesterday, people were wondering about the progressive commitment not just to "more Democrats" but to "more and better Democrats." One might ask, better than what, of course, but one thing liberals know we want are more Democrats like Donna Edwards, genuine and energized progressive leaders. Can reactionary Republicans (basically all of them) and reactionary Democrats be held accountable for the Iraq catastrophe and for the de-funding and the disabling of the federal regulatory agencies?

In November There Will Be No Safe Republican Seats

By: Howie Klein Wednesday May 14, 2008 7:01 am

I have a dream. It isn't as worthy or as grand as someone else's but it's my dream. It's based on the 1936 congressional elections. The reactionary, obstructionist Republicans were reduced to 16 seats in the U.S. Senate. And in the House the reactionary, obstructionist Republicans were reduced to 88 seats (which was 20%).

Blue America Takes a Peek at the Oregon Senate Race

By: Howie Klein Saturday April 26, 2008 11:00 am

No guest today-- and no Blue America endorsement. Or, let's put it another way. Both candidates running in the Oregon Democratic primary are so excellent-- and so much better than the rubber stamp incumbent-- that Blue America is eager to get behind either one. We're happy to leave that up to Oregon Democrats to decide.

By: Howie Klein Saturday April 5, 2008 11:00 am

It would be hard to imagine anything more politically satisfying than seeing Bush's #1 Senate obstructionist, Mitch McConnell, defeated in his re-election bid this November. Live interview with Democratic challenger Greg Fischer.

Blue America Welcomes Martin Heinrich, Our First NM Candidate

By: Howie Klein Saturday March 22, 2008 11:00 am

I had hoped to introduce Martin Heinrich as our newest Blue America candidate last Saturday but, fortunately, he was busy winning the New Mexico Democratic Pre-Primary convention. Among the five hopefuls running for the seat (NM-01) being abandoned by corrupt Bush rubber stamp Heather Wilson, Martin got 56.4% of the vote....

Helping Blue America Decide What To Do About Democrats Who Vote Like Republicans

By: Howie Klein Saturday March 15, 2008 11:00 am

Artwork by Adam Fox for Blue America.Yesterday we celebrated that the Democratic leadership in the House was able to hold nearly the whole caucus together to pass an updated FISA law stripping out Bush's absurd and venal demands for retroactive immunity. And they managed to do that even after nearly two dozen of them had written a letter to the Speaker telling her that they demanded the opportunity to go on
