The Real Turncoat Joe…

Via Atrios, I found a doozy of an editorial in The Hartford Courant:
…Spin One, you could say it illustrates a person's ability to change one's mind in light of new information.
Spin Two, it shows that Joe's views reflect the views of whomever he is massaging at the moment. Looks like he was cozying up to a popular President Bush at the time, a time so long, long ago.
That's the problem with situational beliefs. They reveal a mind sharply tuned to self-interested popularity, for sure, but a mind more focused on opportunism than on what's best for American citizens.
As a congressman or senator, certainly you can be coy until the deal goes down. You can be demure, hesitant, questioning, even stalling, but if you make your decision based on whether or not you will be re-elected or if it will make you more palatable as a candidate for the presidency, then you're a fraud and deserve to be voted out on your keister.
Ideally, a thoughtful person in Congress who is representing a state would take the time to study an issue closely and vote from his or her core beliefs.
I'm not sure Senator Joe has core beliefs anymore, having lived in Washington for so many years. His main core belief seems to be to say and believe anything that fits the moment that will get him re-elected.
Ouch! But if the beenie fits…
