Blue America Welcomes Our Friend Jon Powers Back
[Please welcome Jon Powers back to FDL. His prior Blue America chat is here, and a wonderful introduction to Jon. Please stay on-topic and be polite, and take any off-topic discussion to the prior thread. Thanks! -- CHS]
Since the last time we visited with Democratic congressional candidate Jon Powers he celebrated his big 3-0. But his quest for the congressional seat in NY-26 — a mostly suburban/exurban western New York district stretching from just outside Buffalo to just outside Rochester — has been anything but smooth.
First the entrenched rubber stamp Republican he was running against gave up and announced his retirement.
Then "former" Republican Jack Davis, with a crazy personal vendetta against Cheney (who displeased him by refusing to shake hands with him despite all the money he has given the GOP), decided to try to use his immense fortune to buy the seat. Davis has been running one of the most vicious Rovian campaigns against Powers any Democratic primary has ever seen.
Rovian? How is Jack Davis’ campaign Rovian?
First rule of Rove-politics: attack your opponent’s strongest features. For many of us who have been backing Jon, that strength — or one of them — has to do with his post-military service in Iraq and in Washington on behalf of war orphans. That has become fodder for Davis’ recent attacks (that and a jay-walking ticket Jon once got).
Next month — on September 9th — Jon faces off against Davis and his millions in the most significant primary in New York State. Jon’s campaign, the polar opposite of Davis’, is the model of grassroots/netroots campaigning. Davis has hundreds of millions of dollars — much of it invested in Big Oil companies — and he is spending freely…even trying to bribe another party’s officials to get a ballot line if he loses the Democratic one (as is likely).
But don’t just take my word for it.
Before we talk with Jon today, please meet the Jack Davis who wants to build a double wall to prevent what he predicts could be "another Civil War" and sounds more xenophobic and psychotic than your garden variety Republican. Watch him speaking and ask yourself why he’s running as a Democrat — other than to form an anti-immigrant caucus with Heath Shuler and Rahm Emanuel and to fulfill an outsized and dangerous sense of entitlement.
Watch this and then please think about contributing to Jon’s campaign via the Blue America ActBlue page.
