Sunday Late Nite: LGBT vs. McCain

Posted in: 2008 Election, Arnold, Gay rights, John McCain, McCain, St. John McCain

Happy LGBT Pride Month!  To celebrate Pride, last week presumptive GOP Presidential nominee John McCain sat down with his party’s LGBT group, the Log Cabin Republicans, in a secret meeting.

In a get-together not on McSame’s public schedule, he met with members of the Log Cabin Republicans. Gee, why wasn’t this a big public event – you know, to help educate the rest of the LGBT community about John McCain being down with the homos, that he’s "unashamed, unembarrassed and proud" to associate with the pro-marriage equality gay organization?

To educate non-self-hating LGBTs and all fair-minded Americans, Stonewall Democrats put together this video about McCaint’s "association" with LGBTs.  In addition to the items outlined in their video, McCaint has recently made clear his support of the California Hater Amendment that will strip marriage equality from LGBT Californians.

I support the efforts of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman, just as we did in my home state of Arizona. I do not believe judges should be making these decisions.

I suppose the Log Cabin Boys had to meet secretly not for McCaint’s sake, but for the sake of their still-closeted members: nothing says self-hate like having to meet with your own party’s candidate in secret, does it?  And nothing says that hate’s reflected right back at you like having your nominee come out in favor of the Hate Amendment immediately after your secret meeting.

Senator McCain has gotten credit in the gay community for his opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment due to federalist concerns. This argument might even have won over other conservative Senators, like John Sununu (NH), Chuck Hagel (NE), John Warner (VA), Richard Lugar (IN) and Ben Campbell (CO), to defeat the amendment. But if McCain would support California’s state marriage amendments even though Governor Schwarzenegger opposes it, the facts are clear.

Just as with a woman’s right to choose, confusion is McCaint’s ally.  When women learn he’s a forced-birth proponent, they steer clear.  LGBTs and their allies must understand that McCaint is no friend of our community.  McCaint opposed the hateful Federal Marriage Amendment because he thought it imposed on states’ rights — but that is no reason to think he’ll be any friend of LGBT folks. In fact, as the Stonewall Democrats show, every time he’s had an opportunity to support our community, he’s voted NO. Every time he’s had an opportunity to stand up for LGBT people, he has sat down. Every time he’s been asked to speak up in favor of civil rights for LGBTs, he’s been silent.

John McCain: Bad for LGBT Americans, bad for ALL Americans, bad for America.
