Peggy Noonan On McClellan: Americans Hate A Snitch
Posted in: Media, Random Wingnuttery
The book can be seen as a grenade lobbed over the wall. Thus the explosive response. He is a traitor, turncoat, betrayer, sellout. If he’d had any guts he would have spoken up when he was in power.
I want to quote his defenders, but he doesn’t have any.
Not a one!
Er, except for Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign chief strategist, Matthew Dowd.
"[McClellan's] learned what’s happened when you tell the truth," Dowd said. "All kinds of people he’s worked with for years and years have turned on him." Dowd’s advice: "Stick with his guns. This is about his integrity; just stick with it. The loudest voices are probably going to be ones of anger, but other voices will be kinder."
Oh, and Bush’s re-elect eCampaign director Mike Turk:
Feeling for Scott McLellan. Nice getting savaged for saying what everyone knows to be true anyway.
No defenders anywhere! Geez, you think the WSJ could spring for a few Google monkeys for Nooner.
She continues,
The left, while embracing the book’s central assertions, will paint him as a weasel who belatedly ‘fessed up. They’re big on omertà on the left. It’s part of how they survive.
Really? The right has publicly been burning McClellan at the stake for the past week, calling him a crazy lying abortion-loving (probably gay) terrorist sympathizing liar — but it’s "the left" that’s so big on omerta?
And Americans in general have a visceral and instinctive dislike for what Drudge called a snitch. This is our tradition, and also human nature.
I had no idea Nooner was so gangsta. But didn’t she just say it was "the left" that was so into omerta? Does this mean the whole country’s "left"? I’m so confused.
She concludes:
What’s needed now? More memoirs, more data, more information, more testimony. More serious books, like Doug Feith’s.
You really can’t make this shit up.
