Obama to Nominate John Brennan as CIA Chief

Posted in: CIA

President Obama is expected to nominate John Brennan to be head of the CIA today.

Brennan, who currently serves as Deputy National Security Adviser for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, has played a major role in the institutionalization of targeted killing within the Administration and deliberately keeping it beyond Congressional oversight.,

As the LA Times notes, Brennan was considered too politically toxic to be confirmed as  CIA chief during Obama’s first term as critics questioned his ties to enhanced interrogation.

Ironic that Brennan’s star rises because of his ties to “enhanced interrogation” even as whistleblower John Kiriakou, who never tortured anybody,  becomes the only CIA officer to go to jail for torture.

Perhaps “ironic” is the wrong word.
