McCain: I Fought Hard Against Bush’s Failures In Iraq By Getting Him Re-elected
Posted in: 2008 Election, St. John McCain
Five more US troops were killed in Iraq over the weekend. Why is this still happening, St. McCain?
“We’re paying a huge penalty for four years of a failed strategy that I fought hard against, and I believe this [new] strategy has succeeded and will succeed and can succeed,” McCain said. “But it’s long and hard and tough.”
I’m getting pretty sick and tired of hearing how St. McCain fought so valiantly and bravely against Bush’s failed policies and criminal mismanagement of the war. It seems to me that there actually was a candidate in 2004 who was publicly opposed to Bush’s failures in Iraq: John Kerry.
Kerry was calling it a failure — not Bush. Kerry was calling for Rummy’s dismissal. Not Bush. Kerry was saying there weren’t enough troops on the ground. Not Bush.
So why didn’t St. McCain endorse him? Or, failing that, run as an independent against Bush? Or just sit on the sidelines in protest?
The press needs to push back on this revisionism and hold St. McCain accountable for helping re-elect the guy who’s responsible for the failed strategy — a strategy by the way, which continued for two additional years after the election. A failure that’s still getting our men and women killed, as St. McCain himself admits.
When it came time to course correct and hold people accountable for the failures in Iraq — the people known as "the Bush Administration" — St. John of Arizona the Maverick backed Bush solely to tee-up his nomination in ‘08. In other words, he put his personal political ambition above our nation’s national security.
Enough of the revisionism.
