Can You Name The Mystery Presidential Candidate?

Posted in: 2008 Election, Republicans

Quick quiz. Which candidate belongs to these positions, policies and quotes?

  • Railed against "big business" and argued that the feds should break up monopolies
  • Called American cars "gas-guzzling dinosaurs"
  • Introduced a state minimum wage
  • Increased public school budgets
  • Accused a primary opponent of running a racist campaign
  • Once proposed a 21% state income tax
  • Kicked off his presidential campaign in American slums

On foreign policy:

As we have drifted away from principle at home, we have undermined the foundation of our position in the world. Once a beacon of hope for people everywhere, America is now widely regarded as belligerent and domineering.

On the war:

We are mired in a war which sacrifices are young men and drains our resources, with no end in sight. Time and again we have been taken toward the mountaintop of hope only to fall back into the crevices of sickening reality. False optimism and lack of candor on the part of our leaders have confused our citizens and sapped their resolve.

So who is this tax-and-spend, cut-and-run, blame-America-first, class warring socialist?

Dennis Kucinich? John Edwards?

Try George Romney, Willard’s daddy, who ran for President in 1968.

After Nooner’s "St. Ronnie wasn’t fundie enough for today’s GOP" piece last week, I was delighted to see this article in the Times yesterday about George Romney, who wouldn’t get out of the Democratic field today with some of those positions.

Just more evidence that this isn’t your father’s GOP. Yet we constantly endure the endless hand-wringing/lectures about what truly bad things will happen if the Democrats listen to their base on "the far-left." Uh-huh.

For those interested, George Romney’s ‘68 campaign kickoff speech, with the above quotes, can be found here.
